Title: Walnut bow (full draw added)
Post by: Joec123able on August 01, 2013, 09:39:29 pm
Simple black walnut bow 60 some odd inchs long I forgot. Coming in around 53@25   And about 59 pounds a 27. It was a breeze to make. This is my first walnut bow befor I started it I almost got discouraged as I researched other people's experience with it and Most people seemed to say it Chrysaled easily But that wasn't my experience I think walnut is top notch bow wood and is over looked wayyyy to much I encourage every one to try it it's awesome bow wood and beautiful

Full draw to come hopefully tommorow when it stops raining And again sorry for the crappy pics

Yea it turned out looking really cool it almost looks like the heart wood in the handle is glued on and each sapwood ring is a different shade

Nice work on that BW.

I have limited experience and have only finished 4 bows. 3 osage and 1 black walnut. The walnut has been the best performer so far.

Yea walnut is awesome bow wood thanks to how light it is but I'd still pick a nice Osage stave over walnut To be honest

Nice bow! Strung profile looks really cool. And I like the heartwood in the handle. Adds natural color.  And us self bowyers, natural is what we strive for!

YES that's why I never stain any of my bows and never will I like to let the natural beauty of the wood show ! And thanks so much !

Natural wood is indeed pretty but people of all times have stained bows for different reasons.
Some for ritual or for better "mojo",some because a bright light hickory or similar wood will spook game.
Personaly i like to darken the belly  to cut the glare when you have the sun behind you if the bow is made of light wood.

Of course, nothing wrong with staining them if there really light.
