Title: homemade leather tooling stamps
Post by: mcginnis6010 on July 18, 2013, 05:51:37 pm
Here's four tooling stamps that I made. There made out of 3 1/2 in. nails and I used a file to make the point into a flat surface for a strike point and did general shaping with a mill file and a file that is triangular in shape( not sure of the name). Then sanded and buffed to a polish.

excellent ! mcginnis6010, In Australia we pay around $20 for a current or popular Stamping Tool, I buy mine on clearance Sales and have a rule not to pay more than $5 so really like your ingenuity. The Shell shaped Tool you've made will make for a really nice Border Tool. Thanks for posting

regards Jacko

Wow Jackie $20per stamp? I've seen on tandy leather company website were they start out at like $9.99. I really didn't wanna have to pay 10-15 dollars a stamp so I just made my own.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. They really aren't all that hard to make and if I can make them anyone else definitely can.

That's a great idea.  I'm making some holsters right now and was wondering what I could do to pretty them up a bit.  hmmm wonder if I can file out a Ruger phoenix?

You never know until you try Dave. Oh and keep a scrap piece of bag tan leather around to test the stamps until you have them exactly the way you want them to look. It saves you some aggravation and a few choice words.

Those are looking good.  Hedgeapple, if you want a bigger ruger phoenix, get a picture from a gun magazine or print one out.  wet the leather ( I use rubbing alcohol) and let it soak in.  Cover the leather with some cling wrap and lay the picture where you want it.  trace over the pic with a ice cream stick or toothpick just hard enough to leave an impression in the leather.  Then remove the plastic and pic, and use whatever tools you have to finish stamping it in.
