Got invited to hunt Gators with Eddie[mullet] and Chris this year,I told him I wanted to kill one with home made stuff, this is the arrow I have came up with.
See what you thing. 150 grain point on a forshaft with brass rod added in the center to bring the point weight up to 250 or so.Ricer Cain shaft fletched with Turkey feathers. It has a hole drilled in the forshaft and a line attached that will have a bowie of some sort, hope to get an arrow in the gator and if not a lethal shot be able to track it done for the finishing shot,at least That is the plan. ??? :)
The point is 50.000 Cut off blade steel. :) Anybody ever done this let me know what you think of the plan. :) :)

i wouldnt want one stuck in me thats for sure. they look like they could take an elephant down, nice arrows. :)
-
Those look sweet, Pappy! I hope you get you a biggun!!
-
How are you going to hunt this alligator? The normal method is to shine them at night and snag them with a large fishing pole and reel them in close to the boat and shoot them in the head. What body part are you going to be shooting with this arrow?
-
Yes at night so I understand, hope to get a close shot and put it in the soft spot in the head,if not I need the arrow to penetrate enough to hold with the barbs at the back of the point and the line stay with it so we can follow and hopefully get another good shot. :)

Let me preface this with I know nothing about gator hunting! But I gotta say its in my top five bucket list hunts! I was wondering if there is a tang on the point? Just speculation, but it seems to me that your setup looks awesome if there is a tang that goes all the way back to where your hole is drilled for the cord. It would cheap insurance to drill the hole through the tang and foreshaft so the point couldn't be pulled off the foreshaft. I'm sure you probably already thought of that, but i just wanted to throw in my .02. You know how us youngguns are! Lol! Josh
-
Nope Josh,It don't have a hole drilled there, but great idea, that's the kind of stuff I wanted to hear, modify ,modify till I get it the best and most reliable I can. Still got a month and a half to get the bugs worked out. :)

I sure hope you guys take some pics... before you start drinkin' beer!!

;) ;D ;D ;D

I'll post a picture of my arrows when I get home, Pappy.
-
How big of a gator are you guys gonna go after, Eddie? Might be fun after you perforate a big one!!!
Remember... gators and beer don't mix!! 8)
-
Nice looking arrows, Good Luck on the hunt. Ed
-
I expect nothing smaller than 17 feet! lol >:D
-
I shot 2 alone time ago with a compound. We had long skinny barbed points heavy string we fought them up and finished them off. My 2 were 3 and 4 footer. But one guy shot a 12 foot 800 some pounder we were told. We all shot him like 7 time with broad heads. Those are big heads take a lot of bow to get that head though a 1/4 ,3/8 skin of a big one. And some areas are really tuff deflex bullets.
But I'm sure you'll have fun. We did exspecially the ones that did'nt fall out of the boat.
-
Adam, we're after the biggest one we can get in the time Pappy has the time to stick around. And I don't think I've ever been on a gator hunt without a beer being involved somehow :D. The better shot is behind the front shoulder like anything else unless you are using a .22 ::). My buddy got an 8 footer last year with a 45# recurve with a pass thru shot. We're just trying to get an arrow or two in him to drag the floats. When he gets next to the boat he gets bang sticked. This will also be a first time for me with a permit 8).
Pap' here's my arrows, nothing primitive, I'd use my .17 if it was legal. :)I'm in it for the money, hoping to get one big enough to sell. Nobody wants to buy one under 9'. Under that and most people down here get the meat and bury the rest.
-
Man... I'd sure like to give that a try. I was just bein' facetious about the beer!! 8)

Gator hunting seems the least ethical of all hunting we do. They're so difficult to kill that it seems torturous. For that reason I'll likely never hunt an alligator.
-
They are not hard to kill. I've done it back in the day with .22's, a hammer, and a shovel.
-
Good luck on that gator hunt, guessing you guys are gonna have some fun. No tips on the points from me Pappy, I don't know squat about gators except that you don't want any of your body parts to come into contact with their teeth. ;D Of course you probably already know that. :) :) Good luck.
-
Cool arrows Pappy. They should do the trick. Good luck on your gator hunt.

We're talking bow and arrow here. Yeah, anything is easy to kill if you have the right tool. Kill anything easy with enough dynamite! lol I'm referring to Crooketarrow's anecdote. I suppose I'm not really one to talk ethics though. I guess to my statement was too general as there are multiple factors in killing an alligator and how easily that can happen.
-
Sweet Arrows! Sounds like a blast. I was wanting to try hunting gator when i was in West Texas, but that was still pretty far from gator land, and license for non-res were too exp for my poor butt. Good luck!
-
Thanks guys,I feel sure it will be fun, can't help but be with Eddie and Chris. I know their are better ways to kill one, just want to do it if I can with selfbow and home made stuff. P Tim to each their own. :o If it's legal I am usually in for it. :) Kind of like catching a fish, got to be tough on the fish. ;) :) but bet you do that. ;) :)

looks good pappy, good luck! I've been wanting to do it with a stone point... but iv'e been a bit lazy about it... kinda figuring I'll end up getting my point and everything broke and end up with a lost gator..lol Your setup seems to have good merit tho, I wouldn't hesitate to use it
-
Cool lookin arrow Pappy! I agree w/ Josh though, If the shaft breaks away from the point, you'll want the point hooked to the line, not the shaft. Sounds fun Guys and you won't have to work out for months before going. ;) dpg

I don't know much about gator hunting but I have been bowfishing a decent amount. You may already know this but the arrows like mullet has are fiberglass and are MUCH heavier than a standard arrow. Weight is the key as opposed to speed since your shot will likely be just a few feet away. Another thing that is important with modern equipment that may or may not be as big of a deal with primitive is your line. The modern arrows have a slide that keeps your line in front of your rest. If your line tangles on anything during the shot it can spring back at you and nobody wants that. This is a big deal with compounds because they have so many gadgets attached to the bow. A selfbow is much more streamline but I'd still keep it in mind. Your point looks fine to me. Looks like a little practice and tuning is all you need. Get comfortable with shooting it and handling your line and everything before you get on the boat because its hard to keep it all together when it gets hectic in the moment. Of course, you are a battle tested warrior and may have already known everything I already said. You just never know how much experience people have with things. Its like the difference on baseball and cricket. Both use a ball and bat but its a completely different ballgame. Take pics.
-
Nope Marks no experence at all on gators, quite a bit of bow fishing, thanks for the
advice,I will keep that in mind, the arrow ,head and all are a little over 800 grains. :) Think that is enough :-\ I know the heavy arrow does much better when shooting under the water, hopefully the gator will be floating on top. :)

Very cool stuff hope ya get one
-
Wow Pappy, that sounds like a heck of an adventure! I can't wait to hear how it goes.
-
Just took a look at this.Sounds like a good time Pappy.Have fun. This could be good. When you come back you can thread the hunt, saying here's my alligator I shot with my snake bow.
-
I don't no nouthing about hunting them but they sure do taste good, good luck Pappy
-
What so you plan on doing with the gator? besides eating of course.

I bet he plans on trying to keep the squirrles off it. :o ;D ;D ;D ;) dp

;D ;D ;D
-
Ya the squirrel's, ;) :) :) Not sure,of course I will keep the skull and eatable meat, not sure on the hide, need to kill one first then I will figure that out. ;) :)
Weighted my arrows complete last evening and they are between 825 and 900
grains total, not sure what a glass arrow weighs,I can add a brass rod down the center if yall think I need more weight :-\

Gator boots and a gator hat would look good with those overalls ;) ;D

A gator skin belt would be awesome.
Do I not remember someone, maybe G from Warpath, make and post a gator skin backed bow - or was it gator skin bow handle? I remember it looked real cool but thinking it must add considerable weight.
Russ
-
Pappy, that weight should be fine. My buddy Gene got his last year with a plain 2117 aluminum arrow with a zwickey broadhead, 55# bow. A pass thru shot.
-
Thanks Eddie, that is what I wanted to here,be shooting 50-55 lb. bow. :)

Russ
Russ, the skin is too thick to use for backing in my opinion. I've posted a few with the belly hide for a handle wrap.
-
I'd think that gator hide would make a nice quiver. Good luck fellas! I hope to go on a gator hunt myself someday. I'm thinking when my sons old enough, it would be an awesome hunt to take him on. Josh
-
It could make a sweet armguard.
-
Pappy, those look great, I kinda agree that those broad heads might be a little better for penetration, if they were a little narrower. Just listen to Eddie, and you will be fine. Avoid shooting the back between the skin ridges, as they have boney plates, called "Scoots", or "Buckles". Just stay in the boat. Don't want to hear about how you fell in, and then looked like a coot taking off across the water. ;D ;D ::) Hmmm, gator hide for squirrel bait...... now there is a trade item in the making. Good luck! And definitely take pictures. Don't worry about the beer, a six pack will float. Just be careful picking it out of the water.... ::) ;) You will have fun. And don't forget the therma cell! Oh, and your rain coat! ;) First time with a permit huh Eddie? ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D Pappy you need to get over to the west coast, down near Cape Coral, go water monitor hunting! ;)
Wayne
-
Thanks Wayne for the good laugh this morning, man you have a way with words. ;) :) Josh if Beau [my son] was a little smaller I would take him along,
use him for bait. ;) ;D ;D HA what are kids for if not to help out their old man. ;) :) :)

Lol! You'd have to call him Amos Moses like that Jerry Reed song then! Maybe I better not let my son get to big before I taking him gator hunting else I might end up the bait! Lol! Josh
