no, this isnt about Keenan ;D I have this character yew stave that is a sister to the one i built a couple of years ago for a hunting trip with Gordon. the limbs have a twist which goes opposite on each limb, i am hoping that they will "cance each other out" but we shall see. I have cleaned up the sides of the stave with the bandsaw and marked out where I want to take the wood down to . I will have to be careful so as not to mess up the opposite side since there is a slight twist.
-
next step is to my trusty stave master to work down some more, because of the humps and bumps I will need to be really careful not to splinter the wood, I start with a small drawknife and then go to a scraper, keeping enough of the line visible. next steps will be with a rasp to avoid the splintering issue. I am planning on making this in a american longbow style with flatter limb profile than a elb.
-
Some day I'll build one like that! Looking forward to this :D
-
Hell yeah, Dave! that's going to be awesome. Cant wait to see it finished.
-
Sweet!
I started a yew ELB today myself.... not with that character though.
-
Nice piece of Yew...

been rasping down the high spots, I left plenty of wood to work with with my pencil lines so as not to make any thin areas. still way above target weight, but now need to go slow and follow what the tree has given me. should be getting her to bend soon. there are some drying cracks in the back that I will need to fill with CA glue before i start bending the bow. this was a large old tree, unfortunatly the loggers werent too kind to her and damaged a lot of the sapwood, this one is not bad just some scuffs which I can sand out.
-
I'm anxious to see how this one turns out.
-
yeah,i dont know if keenan could handle a stick like that..better leave it up to a master ;D >:D ;D >:D...that will be some thing to talk about around the camp fire..john
-
well, we shall see. if it blows up then I can go from hero to zero in 2 seconds ;D
-
I think you will hero this one out. Looking forward to seeing this one.
-
Dang fine looking stave you got there Dave. Can't wait to see the finished bow
-
NICE - gotta love those wavy Yew staves ! Bob
-
That's a beauty of a stave. Enjoy. Jawge
-
That stave is so freakin sexy...
-
May I suggest a name for this bow, should it survive the tillering process?
"toomanycurves"
-
cant wait to see the done deal. almost makes me dizzy looking at it . puts me in mind of one Gordon did a while back.
-
Glad that beauty was salvageable. Really a great piece of wood. I'll be following this!
-
thanks guys, this thing has more curves than Marilyn Monroe, and as I proceed they get more pronounced, may be a good thing. hmmm maybe another name could be Marilyn? ;) but it needs to survive first. I will post more pics soon. continuing with the rasping, I too am getting dizzy at times :) filled in some of the drying checks with CA glue, but need to buy new mine is getting too thick. bow is starting to bend and will be working on the floor tiller tomorrow. ohma2, doubt it will turn out as good as Gordons, but that is a lofty goal to strive for. will keep you all postd on the progress.
-
Wow ! Goodluck tillering that thing ! I wouldn't know where to start
-
i cant wait to see this one finished, good luck with it. :)
-
Got to love that stave, looking forward to seeng how that comes out. :)

Oh my. That is one rollercoaster piece of wood. Can't wait to see it finished!

spent some of the afternoon chasing "islands" because of the wavy profile I was working on leaving enough wood in the deflex curves so as not to cause a hinge, conversley, I wanted to remove wood on the deflex curves to even out the bend. stave is starting to bend decent, I shortened the stave to have less twist in the limb tips, the stave is now 68" which is a good length for this so as not to overstress it at a 28" draw. will continue to go slow and test bend often, wont be long I can try a long string on it and put it on a tiller tree. the stave master is very helpful in working this stave, holds it well and can change angles with ease. thanks Keenan.
-
oops...I meant that I wanted to remove wood on the "reflex" curve. ::)
-
She's looking good Dave.
-
Bet this stave is schooling you pretty good, challenging to the end.
It almost looks like someone pressed this tree against a corrugated tin shed as it was growing up. Whoo-eeei! What a ride!
-
it is strange in that the bumps are at a angle across the stave which is probably better than being horizontal, but it is challenging. I have high hopes for this stave, the other gave me my first primitive elk.
-
Looks like your up for and wanting a challenge ....good luck :D

That clears things up. Couldn't figure out what was going on looking at that upper limb belly. That is looking good. 8)

Looks like a roller-coaster, pretty excited to see where this goes!
-
got to work on this some today. scraped down the limbs and got it bending some more, put on the long string, still a ways to go but now comes the hard part, seeing where it is stiff with all those curves.
-
the stave master is really handy to work the limbs. here is a pic of the waves getting more pronounced...surfs up...
-
Thats gonna be a beauty JJ, looks like your on track to pull it off.
-
Wow, coming along great! What a beauty. Are you finding any limb twist as you are reducing the limbs?
-
each limb has some twist going opposite directions, one seems to be straightening out some but the other still has a good twist to it, will see what happens as we get her bending more, still really stout.
-
Why such a long string??
-
I just tied 2 strings together, didnt want a lot of extra dangling.
-
That is looking nice.
-
I just tied 2 strings together, didnt want a lot of extra dangling.
No... that's not what I meant. Why are you using such a long longstring?

No... that's not what I meant. Why are you using such a long longstring?
this string is longer than usual because I didnt have one that would work so I tied a couple together and didnt want a lot of extra string dangling. no other reason really.
