Title: Northern Pauite (Great Basin) Bow & Arrow set
Post by: billy on July 02, 2013, 11:29:11 pm
Here's a replica Northern Paiute archery set that I just completed.  I used the exact same materials that the Paiute used in central and SE Oregon.  Bow is sinew backed juniper, has a sinew string and is 53 inches long.  Arrows are reed with greasewood foreshafts and are tipped with obsidian desert side notched points, just like the originals.  The paint on the arrows is all earth paints and the design is an exact copy of one that was found in Roaring Springs Cave.  Quiver is bobcat skin.  Bow pulls 45 lbs at 28 inches.

I can't give away all the pics because I submitted an article about it to the magazine.  When it gets published then you will get to see the bow in all its glory!    But yeah, this set took a hell of a lotta work to make.  Not sure how many hours I spent in making it...but it was a lot.

As a native Oregonian I salute you! That is one fine replica piece!
My favorite style lately have been on the Nootka and kwakawakawakwa coast natives. Truly safisticated designs:)

Can't wait to see the F/D on that beauty:)

Thanks guys!  The pigments are colors that I picked up over the years on my travels.  The green came from eastern Oregon and is probably the same green pigment that the original arrow fragment was painted with.  I was driving out in the middle of nowhere and passed by what looked like a deposit of flint up on the side of a roadcut.  I turned around to investigate it.  It turned out to be opalite, a very weak, brittle material.  Unfortunately it was laced with cracks that made it unusable for knapping.  But what I did find was small emerald green nuggets of pigment eroding out of the deposit of opalite.  I don't know what it is, possibly a mineral with copper in it, but it is a really striking green color.  The orange ochre is stuff I picked up in roadcuts as well.  The black is simply crushed charcoal.
