Run a search for "sign" or "signing". This topics keep re-appearing every month or so. There is soooo much to find about this topic, that it's worth a try.

I use a fine point sharpie and a fine point paint pen.  I let them dry for a while and then put the finish over it.  No problems with smudges.

Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph hollow nib pen set!!! A little expensive, but well worth it. They are refillable so you can use different inks. I use acrylic ink for white and india ink for black. Let them dry for an hour or so then use an aerosol finish to spray just that area so it wont smudge when you do a wipe on finish.

I use fine point sharpies in different colors over tru oil, but it has to be sealed or else subsequent coats of tru oil will dissolve the sharpie away.  I seal with one very thin localized coat of water based minwax polycrylic.

I usually put down 2 coats of varnish then write my name/draw weight/ length ect... then an extra cost onto that.

I use a super fine tipped sharpie marker on fresh wood, then dab finish on top. If I don't wipe the finish on, it doesn't smudge or streak.
