Title: bowyers knife design
Post by: BOWMAN53 on June 28, 2013, 10:27:46 pm
I have this idea for a "do it all" bowyers knife. Heavy for chopping, beveled edges for  ease. Another smaller edge for precision chopping, serated edge for sawing and finally an attachment for draw knife handles.

What do you guys think? Is it feasible?

Is it feasible?

Absolutely!  Do it man!  ... just keep in mind I have nothing to lose by thinking this is a good idea.

personally I don't think the serrated edge is necessary and that seems like it would be hard to make.

I would ditch the saw edge.  They are murder to make right, and you're not going to be able to heat treat it effectively.
Is it necessary?

Necessary? is it necessary for me to drink my own urine? No, but it's sterile, and I like the taste.

Short story=  Do it, take lots of pics, report on its performance.

Make it sturdy enough to chop down a tree.
Make it machete-like, with draw-knife handles. Ditch the saw-edge. They are useless.
Try it. Make it heavy and TOUGH. No coatings, heavy tool steel. I am very hard on tools, I will break a cheap cruddy tool made in China...
And a lot of cheap knives. Don't make it folding.

The serrated edge can go. Im pretty rough on my tools too.

This is open for anyone to try, like i said, i don't have the equipment or know how.

I am going to try it with mild steel.
Maybe put a scraper on it somewhere?

Instead of the serrated edge it could be a scraper instead.  Let me know how its going

Google the Tom brown tracker knife. Mine weighs 2 lbs out of high carbon steel. It has it all ;) I've made a couple quickie bows in the past with it. The drawknife function of the blade works great for me. All around bowers survival tool :)

What ever you do put a beer bottle opener on the handle, very important for bow making :P
