On my way home from work this morning and something on the side of the road caught my eye. I saw how big it was and thought no way was it a native snake. I did a U-turn and went back to pick it up. It was a massive Black Rat Snake. Its the biggest one I have ever seen. And it has a nice pattern. There is some damage on the head and tail but the body is untouched.
It is 6'2".

SWEEEEEEEET!!!!! :)

That is a dandy! Nice find! Josh

Dang that's a monster! Glad you're able to make the best out of a bad situation. Poor snake :'(
-
Nice and if it's 6'2", then you gotta be about 4 foot? LMFAO
-
Nice, found one that same pattern not quite as big ,last week in the road right beside my drive way ,folks thought I was crazy out picking it up,it was still wiggling. :)

That does have a really nice pattern. Cool!
-
My stepson picked up one for me the other day just a tad under 6ft. I wonder how old they are at that size?
-
I was wondering the same thing.
I got it skinned and scraped clean. I had to extend my snake drying board. First time I've had to do that. This makes the 4th roadkill I've picked up in the last week.

The belly scales are almost 2" wide! This is probably the biggest native snake I'll ever see in Indiana.

Looks kinda like this one:

3-5' are common around here. I've seen a few 6' but much more rare. Wikipedia says they can make it to 7'
It amazing you can have 6' of snake and only the head area damaged. lucky.

nice find Clint.i have found a few that big here, but they are few and far between.i allways caught them live and released them.hope i find a roadkill that nice and big.i can't wait to see the bow it is going on.
-
Whoa Clint! What a nice snake! We don't get 'em that big 'round these parts.
-
3'-5' are what I usually find with the occasional bigger one hear and there but nothing close to this guy. It was so much thicker than what I normally find. I thought maybe it had just had a good meal but its stomach was empty.

Those things must have really been out the last couple of days. Yesterday morning I was on the Natchez Trace headed to a meeting and saw one in the middle of the oncoming lane. He looked in really good shape, but I was late and could not stop. I saw him on the way back through, but by then he was a pancake. Later in the day my son called me and had found a small one on the road and I saw 2 more that had been run over before the end of the day. They were all black snakes. I didn't see them close enough to know exactly what kind though.
-
Clint that's a really nice find. I've had near seven footer before. They do get big and fat. Their belly skins are darn pretty too.

HOOSIER PYTHON! :o. That is a dandy! I couldn't figure out how you had it pinned and realized that you split it down the side and not ventral. Gonna try it on my next road kill that isn't skidded on by every passerby.
I get funny looks picking up road kill snakes on my bike rides cause I wrap them around the seat post and tie them in a knot until I get back home. It gets a little weird pedaling when I get more than one ;D

Tracy, on the snakes that are thick enough I split them one row of scales to the side of the belly scales with a pair of scissors. After its dry I'll do the same on the other side of the belly scales and I have two backings from one snake. If the snake is skinny I'll just unzip it down the belly.

I'd guess a snake that size in around 7 to 10 years old. Food availability is a big factor though.

Good genetics can only express themselves when the diet allows. That snake was obviously in the top 10% of his class! He did his share of quelling Hanta virus outbreaks, RIP big feller (though in all likelyhood it was a female).
That oughta back a serious longbow!

That snake has beautiful markings. I hope you draw my name again for the bow trade next year. :) But that guy will be on a bow WAY before then, I bet. Good score!
