Found this in my yard the other day. Any ideas? My guess is owl.
-
Yep, from the look of that "fuzzy" edge I'd say owl too. Might want to post a picture of it on the ground and not in your hand, though. :)
-
I know Patrick, stupid laws! I stuck it in the side of a tree in the yard. It was either that or the dog eats it.
-
This is a flight feather of a hawk owl,so it rules out that species. If you have never seen one maybe google it ,their really grumpy looking things !lol!
-
Its sad I cant utilize this feather one way or another.
-
Looks to me like it came off of a barred owl. I've seen feathers just like that around where I live and I mostly see barred owls.
-
You could chop it down a bit and tie it to the tip of a bow as a wind indicator.
-
Not even suppose to pick them up man. Its a federal offense here in the states.
-
OIC,seems a little harsh!
-
I still think its from the rare Mongolian Tulip Pecker. ;D

yup owl for sure! I had one hit my truck one morning on the way to work this past winter...cost me a driving light and a new "bumper" (plastic) on my truck. Bugger was in full dive at something in the ditch and i crossed his path at the wrong time.
-
I would sinew wrap that on my arra I tell you what.

Yup and he has to leave his shirt out to cover up that beer gut:)

Yes its an owl feather, looks molted as well. I always admire them when I see them but let them lay where they fell . I recently saw some buzzard feathers under a roost an was suprised how pretty they actually are as well. Im such a bird lover that just seeing such things in the wild is a real treat!
Last week on a walk through the woods a coopers hawk flew right over my head with a squirrell in its talons. Was an amazing sight.
-
When I was young, I had an owl feather I found in...Illinois, or such
Where did that feather go? Hmmm, I do not know >:D
-
IndianGuy I had the PRIVELAGE of watching a Coopers take out a full grown drake Woody.....in flight! Then he ate his breast meat while he was alive. The duck had half his breast gone and was still alive after 30 minutes. The Coopers eventually dragged the duck into the woods and stashed him under a dead fall. Ill never forget that 45 minutes of my life.

Surely the Game Wardens have better things to do than stalk PA for owl feather picker upper picture poster. Say that 3 times fast.
-
MarkS, I'm too busy laughing to say that 3 times fast!

Yeah, tell me about it! I reached over to adjust the jesses on our great horned owl yesterday morning without first showing her my hand....she gave me such a dirty look and clamped down on the glove hard enough to leave bruises on my hand! I accept the fact that she hates me, that will never change. But she trusts me and will stand on glove while I walk around a classroom full of kids, she knows I will keep her safe. And that means the world to me.
Great horned owls, by the way, can produce 29 lbs of pressure with each of their 8 talons. Do the math. When in difficult times they have been known to take foxes as prey. They weigh 3-3.5 lbs and take out a 12 lb predator?

I've seen Redtails catch Rabbits/squirrels and snakes several times, when I am bushhogging in the fall they set in the trees on the edge looking for supper. Pretty cool to watch for me,not the critters they catch. :) Wonder if they know snakes are protected in Tennessee. ??? ;) :)
