Title: Bear camp bow building....
Post by: steve b. on June 05, 2013, 12:29:48 am
Spent a few days in eastern Oregon trying to find a bear and do some camping.  Mostly got rained out but did have some good outings, even in the drizzle, and some great camp time.  No bears.  Spent a few hours working on bows.  Here's camp and Bryce, the Pinecone, Ott, working some local wood.  I roughed out an 80" lodgepole pine war bow (coming soon) and Bryce worked some dogwood.

Lodgepole pine, that's right.  CMB, don't you remember that little sapling D-bow that I made at this camp, with paracord string, using only pocket knives, that I took home and put a real string on and shot for awhile, then threw in the firewood pile for several months of rain, then pulled out to show you how it still bends nicely?  It was easy to know when you were at full draw for this bow because it would start to crack; that's when you released.  That thing took zero set.  Capish?
Well just think what a 3" wide, 80" version will do.  It might take two men to pull it to full draw but it should shoot an arrow about half a mile.

Can't wait for that wargbow, aughta be awesome! I think i might try one made of a fir branch, i did a bend test on one i made in about 5 minutes and it handled more draw than my arms could reach.

Nice, bear camp?  Looks like bow camp!  I'm interested to see this lodgepole bow as well!  That's awesome, of course Bryce has got some of the best wood  :o

Looks like a great time!

I've often thought of using Lodgepole pine for bows but never really got the wherewithal to try it. Looking forward to seeing the end result!

I wanted to go to the gathering but there was no way:(
Next year I'll hit spring bear a little earlier, and make it down.
