Title: Another dumb goat
Post by: osage outlaw on May 28, 2013, 10:27:16 pm
My wife has been wanting to get a pygmy billy goat.  She wants it to have horns and a beard.  She has been bugging me about it all year.  She is a city girl who is slowly turning into a farmer.  I didn't think we needed another goat and I have been trying to talk her out of it.  We have my sons 4H goat for this year and my daughters from last year.  She got to attached to it to let it go to the market.  I kept telling the wife that we didn't need to be buying food for another dumb goat.  Well, tonight I get to work and I get a call from my sister.  She is next door at my parents house with my wife and kids.  Guess what comes walking out of the woods?  A pygmy billy goat with horns and a beard   ::)  My Dad and wife caught it and walked it to the pasture.  She is as happy as can be.  It has a collar on it.  They drove around the neighborhood asking if anyone had lost a goat.  No one is claiming it.  I told her I wish a new quad would come rolling out of the woods for me.  She has been texting me pictures of it all evening.  She named it Winston.

I didn't at first.  I knew my wife didn't go get it.  I thought maybe my sister brought it home for her.  After I talked to my kids I believed the story.  The dumb thing just walked out of the woods and into the yard.  What are the odds?

Haha great!!! My daughter wants a goat too... Hopefully she doesn't find one  I heard you can train them like dogs though

after you get your quad-
"but honey it was just sitting at the dealership all alone, I couldn't just leave it there..."

My longtime girlfriend wants a goat. And to tell the truth, I wouldn't mind either. But seeing as how we live in an apartment in the middle of  a city, its not happening. But we're hoping to own property of our own within a couple years, and a goat is probably in our future.

Good luck training a goat.  They don't seem very smart to me.  I swear my daughters goat is mentally challenged.  It kept getting out while I was at the Classic.  The fence was sagging on one side.  It wasn't jumping it, he would put his front legs over the fence and flop himself over it landing on his side.

Maybe I'll send you the last critter that wondered into our yard Tracy.  A cat could probably fit in that box if it was folded properly.  I hadn't thought about horns.  He has a long way to go before it would be big enough for a horn bow.  I bet I could get plenty of tip overlays from it though.

Awesome story! That was a good way to start my day. If a lot of time and attention is spent on them at a young age, goats really are supposed to train up like dogs. There's an old PA issue about using goats as pack animals. I read on a book called "The Pack Goat"...interesting stuff. Likely my stomach would get the better of me and a fire pit would be in his future.

Enjoy your new pet!

Goat rawhide makes great backing material and cabrito is good on the BBQ.

Osage, maybe you could see if you're wife will train the wee beastie as a pack animal? ;)

I almost got a pygmy last year with the intention of trying to train it for packing, but decided against it as I wouldn't have time for training (and the idea of a hunting MTB was more attractive). It would still be great to have one as a hiking companion though.

SquirrelSlinger, from what I've read, they will graze; but maybe Osage can give us some first-hand experience if we can talk him into training one ;P

I'll let the wife do the training.  He will live out his days fat and happy in our pasture with the other goat and pony.

Never had goat cheese but the best ice cream I have ever had was home made with goat milk.

I'll graciously pass on the kitty :P Make up a harness for the little guy and use him to pull out the deer you shoot , since an ATV didn't wander onto you place ;)

My dad has kept goats since I was just a wee kid myself.
Outlaw is right about the goat milk icecream.  Man it is so good.

Goats will graze some but they are much more browsers like a deer.
They love blackberry briers, kudzu, Japanese honeysuckle that sort of stuff.
They like a bit of shade in the hot summertime also.

I have read several "Pack Goat" stories over the years.

When I trim the low hanging osage limbs out of the yard I throw them over the fence.  The goats will strip every leaf and every last bit of bark off of them.

The dumb thing is already a pain in the butt.  He learned how to jump and balance on a board and then up and over a fence seperating part of the pasture.

Friends of mine bought their son a goat for a pet.  The little billy was about a year old and loved his pet boy.  One day the boy was bent down on one knee tieing his shoe while waiting for the bus to pick him up for school.  The billy saw the top of the boy's head and thought it was in invitation for play.  Mom looked out the window just in time to see the impact and her son go flying.

Being an ER nurse, she knew the convulsions her son was experiencing while unconscious were serious, so she threw him in the truck and headed for town at 100 mph.

Two days later I was dressing out some of the best meals I ever had.  Mmmm, cabrito!

OO, your shoe is untied.  >:D
