I started this one at home and finished it up at Marshall. Pretty simple poplar board bow. 66" ntn and about 50#@28". 10" handle and fades and 2.5" wide at the fades with a convex taper to 1/2" tips. Tip overlays are poplar as well. Took just over an inch of set and shoots pretty good. Thanks for looking! ;)

Now that is just cool just proves any wood will make a bow
-
I see you got some of the doubters out there trying her out... >:D Very impressive.

;D ;D ;D ;D ...lmao    .....good times :D
I see pearly is gun shy not pulling her all the way >:D
And I did drill one of those clay pigeons out of three arras first time ever shooting it.... ;)
-
I'd be too stressed watching other guys pulling back my bow. :-[ Of course any of those guys could make another in about 30 minutes. very nice bow btw!
-
I love the blackmail pics of us all shooting it! In all honesty Ryan did a good job on it, and I was impressed overall. He proved his point for sure. Poplar is king!
-
So Ryan, are gonna try balsa wood next! Hey, good on ya for trying the poplar.

Like I said Ryan colors outside the lines, Poplar??? :)
Cooool!!!
-
There you go! That's a funny way of asking for decent bow wood >:D
-
Now thats cool, a poplar bow that can be shot ;)
-
Sweet bow! I loved it at the rendezvous. Bows is bows is bows they are all good if designed well. Great one Ryan.
-
Nice job, Ryan. I never would have thunk it!! ???
-
Way to make it happen Ryan, what was the mass weight of the finished bow?
-
WOW, everybody gets to shoot that cool bow!
Looks like fun!

Thanks guys! My scale says the bow is about 19.5oz in mass although it did soak up a lot of wipe on poly like nothing I've ever seen. :o Well after all my talking I thought I should put up or shut up with a bow before I start school. I started the bow at home and thought I'd bring it to Marshall to finish up even thought it might be a risky move. If this bow broke I know I'd never hear the end of it! ::) Got her tillered out and got a few shots in myself before Guy (BuckeyeGuy) took some shots at the pigeons. After that quite a few guys gathered around to try it which was my intention although not to the extent that happened! Luckily the bow held up and with a decent amount of set. Like I keep saying, I think it's important to look at what a wood can do and for me it was certainly fun to check poplar off the list of bow woods to try. As far as availability goes, poplar is right there with red oak and probably with better grain so it could be added to the list as a beginner wood (although I'm not sure how forgiving it is). Anyways, I hope I was able to change a few minds, even if you're not all running to the homedepot after seeing this. ;) Thanks again everyone and to everyone who got a chance to shoot the bow! It all means a lot to me. :)

Very nicely done man :) Respect
-
I love it!!!!!!
LOL
-
Very well done. Ill have to try it and see, if I can make a bow out of it then most should be able to make a bow from it.
-
Very nice bow. Tiller looks great. Jawge
-
BUSTED! I crapped my knickers when I seen it. I knew I was in for it! Good job Ryan. Like the guys said, it was actually quite a shooter!
-
thats fun to see! I don't have my TBB4 next to me, does that mass line up with the mass principle chart? just curious.
-
Wow, that's too cool. Who'da thunk it would make a usable bow? Anywho, now all you need is some poplar arrows to complete the set!
-
That's great! Ha!
Now for willow staves...
-
That's great! Ha!
Now for willow staves...
And then cotton wood and then maybe Douglas fir and every other wood that's considered bad bow wood
-
The trick now is to shoot a 1000 or more arrows through her. I will take it off my crap bow woods list if that happens.
-
Nice job Ryan,it looks good to me. :)

Sorry I was a little late to see this post , should of been on top of it !
I watched Ryan take the first shot and pulled it out of his hands !
I hauled it back to full length of the arrows and let em fly !
I drilled three clays in a row with it then started hooping and hollering for the rest to shoot it!!!
Big fun !!
That novelty shoot is 3 shots for a dollar , we took in 20 dollars as fast as we could set the targets !!
Thanks Ryan for being a good sport , I never even ask if it was OK !
Too excited to see your bow done and shooting so well !!
Now I gota find me some Poplar for sure !

Laugh! Nice bow! I am still working on a willow deflex-recurve bow... It isn't going that good.
-
cool experiment ryoon 8) !a little lack of confidence judging from the f/d shots!lol!
-
Thanks guys! I'm not sure if there really is a limit for some woods but I think it would be fun to find out! Maybe someday I'll find that perfect stave of balsa! ;)
Guy, I'm glad it was able to raise a little money! You did a better job than I could have of getting the guys to shoot it. ;D
Pearlie, I'll be sure to let you know how it holds up. ;)
-
So, Ryan - How's this bow holding up? I thought about it today while posting on the OSAGE IS WORTH IT thread and thought to ask... (I just couldn't resist resurrecting this one!)

That's really cool. I was at lowes like 30 min ago looking at boards and wondered if poplar would make a decent backing for an oak board bow. I think the contrast would be pretty anyway.
-
Haven't been able to shoot it very much but every time I'm home I string it up and take a few shots. Still alive! ;D
-
The last one I made was about the same demesions as yours. I got it out to 36" draw and it never broke. Took about 4" set. Poplar can make some real fast bows. A buddy of mine had a sinew backed poplar he shot for about 8 years at 3 d shoots. It was a great shooter.
-
It must have been a very poplar bow the way everyone wanted to shoot it!
As for the willow bow, my tattoo slinging buddy MIkey built his first ever bow out of peachleaf willow (Salix amygdaloides)....a beaver cut tree, no less. Pulls almost 50 lbs at 26", and has taken about 2" of set. Mind you, it shoots a 500 grain arrow at about 130 fps. But it shoots and has not broken after thousands of arrows.
-
Nice work Ryoon!
-
I have one I heat treated just to practice the process. I put about 3" of reflex into it and im waiting for it to rehydrate (which probably won't happen in my house ). I will try short stringing it non monday. Ill post a couple pics at some point. Its 69" ntn and 2 1/4" at the fades with a semipyramid taper to 1/2" nocks. I cant remember what I did for the handle...4 1/2" maybe ???.
-
Next up......a cork bow! ;D Great job Ryan!

I LOVE IT! What an awesome thread and an AWESOME BOW! Nice work!
