Another hickory board longbow, bend through the handle. Around 45 to 50 pounds at 27 not exactly sure but its in therange i was aiming for. This is also my first leather handle wrap. Purple heart tip overlays and arrow shelf.
Weird angle but the tiller is good.

Very nice. I have a few bows with purple heart tips. Looks real nice against the lighter colored wood. Looks great!
-

Oooohhhh pretty! simple is best!!!!!!
-
Thanks guys. The tips keep changing color from purple to brownish purple, am i tripping or is this normal?
-
Remember what the purple heart looked like in the rough? It will eventually turn back to that. It's the effects of ultraviolet rays and oxygen. A waterbased finish with UV blockers goes a long way to delay the inevitable, but gives it sort of a plastic looking finish.

Hey Bowman, I pick up a hickory elb for my girlfriend the other day. I shoot it about 40 times so far and notice that there is a bit of hand shock from it. I got some cork ordered to wrap the handle with and hoping that helps. Was just wondering if this is common for an elb that bends thru the handle or if the builder may have not done as good a job with it as he could have?
By the way you did good with those tips, I like em! Nice bow you got there.
-
A well tillered bow shouldnt have any hand shock. Im no expert though so mine always have a hintof hand shock. Try using a fast flight string, i actually did a side by side test today with fast flight and b50 dacron. I found that b50 vibrates alot more than FF.

Did you cook the purpleheart at all,,just wondering,, cooking it will draw the oils out of the wood and keeps the color,, it will turn blackish on the outside and when you cut it will be more purple inside,, of course not all purpleheart is created equal,,SOME will do this, cook at 200-250° for about 30 to 45 min watch closely and turn it at least once, this works with the stock i have, with yours cooking times may vary. Try it first on scrap. Good luck.

Photobucket has an app that is pretty good on android. I'm sure they are on iphone too. I use it quite a bit. You can get the img code from it too.

What do you mean but cook it?
-
Its normal for it to change color. Baking it may get it too brittle and may split apart and explode as an overlay. I would consider skipping the baking part. Just my opinion.
-
What about padauk? Im trying that on my next bow.

To cook, as in pu in oven with heat on,, if your just using the purpleheart for tips maybe handle, it wouldnt matter much about brittle i would think, i have a pendant that is 3 or 4 yrs old, cooked and unfinished (naked wood) its still as purple as the first day i wrkd it. Purple heart is pretty brittle to begin with ,a very dense heavy wood. Tried pics didnt wrk for me.
-
Figured out how to post,, outside is the cooked part inside is what happened after you wrk the wood.
