Title: Bows made at the Classic
Post by: stringstretcher on May 11, 2013, 11:06:17 am
Since there was so much going on at the classic, a lot of us might have missed some of the bows that were made while at the classic.  How about posting up pictures of the ones that were made while at the classic, those for the challenge as well as those that were made other than the challenge.

This is a cool thread idea.  I would like to contribute, but I gave away the one bow I made before I could finish it or take pics.  I look forward to seeing what folks made.  Josh

I made a kid's bow for my son. I'll post a pic of that when I can get a shot of him shooting it. I also completed my first Osage bow there (with the help of many). Blackhawk just couldn't understand why I worked on the same bow for 2 months! Every time he came by my workstation he would ask "Is that the same bow?" and "you still working on that?"  Just so you know BH, it is completely finished. All it likes is a smear of deer blood to properly christen it.  :D

Glad I'm not the only one who take forever to make a bow. I may try to visit the classic next year but it will have to be a day visit. Not sure I'd be able to campout as my wife and I will be having our first baby in December if all goes well. Who am I kidding.....yall probly won't see me next year either.  :'(

I already posted this somewhere else, but this is my buddy's first bow ever. When we arrived on Thursday I hooked him up with the orange shirts and let him take wood in hand. He fell in love with the whole process and couldn't believe how much fun he was having. I ended up helping him get it shooting on Friday and he was very pleased.

He called me last week and asked when we could go back! I think he was runnin a fever.  >:D

I think someone took a pic of mine I made.R/D osage. It's an above average 49# shooter.Good for me to shoot at the target range to keep my form good. Not that it could'nt kill a deer though. How many bows were made?I've heard unconfirmed numbers of 60 to 100.Someone should be in charge of that.......LOL.

68 registered for the Self Bow Challenge.  Based upon the last 4 years registering folks at the Classic working on bows I'd estimate the number built is between 95-120.  I tried to track the number of bows built a few years but the response was never complete.  By that I mean it didn't work out as planned because folks forget to see me with the results of the final shooting bow so I could log them in.

I may try it next year with a different approach.  Perhaps a drawing for a prize with tickets given to those who turn in their results.  I'd need the info such as:  Osage bow, 66" TTT, 49 lbs @ 27" and a name.  I bet I could get a few prizes made by friends to offer for turning in your bow results.  Maybe a ticket for  each bow built.  I'll run it past Pappy, Greg, Anthony, Chuck, and Will.  If anyone thinks this might be a good idea speak up here and I'll talk with the guys.  I figure we could do it on Saturday for the drawing prior to the Knapping event seeing as how a lot of folks like to watch the boys in the pit make their magic.

I need to mention how much it means to us at Twin Oaks that we get good folks to help with the new people learning to build bows.  We honestly could not do it without such wonderful help from the PA community.

Great post Charlie!  I would be curious to know, also.  It is hanging on my rack to finish, still with a tillering string on it.  I intend to sinew back it in a couple of weekends.  I'll try to remember to post when it is done.

Jon:  I'll try to encourage the bow makers to check in with you next year if you (the club) decide to try your idea.

Having too many issues with a real snaky piece, I made a quick one Saturday morning to shoot in the challenge.  I shot the course with it in time though.  I was still scraping/tillering it thru the first ten targets of the course.  If you saw osage shavings on the ground, they were from me.  Maybe I ought to go back an clean them up!  >:D

Jon, that is a great idea. I'll push the guys I help to sign up. I helped 4 brothers from beginning to end and many others that either asked or looked like they needed help. I'd like to know how many bows were built in total that week.
Matt, I've been thinking about that lil snake. She's a tough little bugger. Keep us posted about her progress.

Thanks_Jon_ for the info.& that's a LOT of bows.Great idea about the prizes. That'll work I bet.I personally gave away 3 roughed out bows and a couple of staves while I was there.I seem to always have more raw materials here than I really need. Not just wood either.
Great story Matt.I saw you take care of a fella there with his first bow and you took care of him from the tip of his nose to his feet with everything but making an arrow for him.
Sounds like a lot of people get em shooting at the classic and put the final tweaking and finish at home.I know I did.

Jon, I am not saying this to be harsh, but maybe it could become part of the rules?  You have to have your picture taken with the bow, before you can compete in the Challenge?  It only takes 30 seconds to get a picture.  Just a thought.

I only posted this because as we roam around watching all the bows being made, they will catch my eye and I will say to myself, I would love to see how that piece of wood turns out, only to never see the completed bow.

Maybe I should ask first, how many of the 60 plus people that signed up and registered, actually shot the bow for a score in the challenge?

Here's the bow I made for myself at the classic. I'll make a topic for the other. Anyways, it's pretty simple. 66" ntn and 40 something at 28" but I've only been drawing it to around 25-26" (gotta work on my form  ::) ). 1.5" wide to mid limb tapering to 3/8" tips with a 10" handle and fade section. I also trapped this one a bit but I don't remember the ratio. Simple but shoots better than I do.  :P (Also looks like the upper limb is bending more than the bottom and it's bugging the crap out of me!  :o )

Here's one from a nice piece of yellow wood from Mike. Tip overlay material from Cody (thanks again Cody) I'm glad I brought my tools this year...something special about a bow that was built at the Classic.
It is really closer to 50lbs. @ 28 than 45....62in ntn.... pretty smooth shooter to boot.

Once again, each year at the Classic gets better.
It was good shooting with Rick and Darren (whitefeather).

William and I built this with a lot of help from Greg, Will and, especially Cody. It shoots great and William loves it. 48" NTN and 20# @ 22". I'll post some detail pics and one at full draw as soon as I can get them. Thanks to everyone who made the Classic possible. It was a fantastic weekend and an experience that I (and I hope William) will remember for a very, very long time.
