Title: Small buckthorn and chokecherry haul
Post by: Dauntless on May 09, 2013, 02:59:48 pm
Gnarly, orange, dense, ring porous: I think buckthorn is the closest thing to osage I can get up here in Quebec. 10 staves in total : 6 straight and 4 funky. Rings are almost paper thin with tough growing conditions (short growing season and little to no soil). All that wood has over 25 years.

Nice haul.  I see some potential character bows in there.

Sweet little haul there! I really like this buckthorn wood.
I got a few good staves right now and was gonna post these others on another post, but this seems a good spot.
2 split staves had ring separation all the way down the length. I cut them in Dec. and had some real cold days since. I never noticed the rings then. You think that the cold split em?
I don't think I should use them but? What do you all think?

The same tree had some serious ring separation about 10 rings from the centre a couple feet lower than these staves. I actually cut the wood to make the edges on a table, the bow staves are a bonus.

Not sure what causes the separation. The wood is definitely darker around those areas but then again it is everywhere there is damage to the tree. I'd say pop out the separated piece and see if there is enough wood left to make a bow. Industrial amounts of superglue could do the trick as well.
