The books wernt doing to well for me either, but there are plenty of nice folks on here that would be more than happy to help you build a bow. The helped me step by step for making my first red oak bow (in this thread http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,37695.msg499029.html#msg499029 (http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,37695.msg499029.html#msg499029)) best of luck to you!

as straight a grain as you can get, look at all 4 sides and look to see if the grain runs off one way or another, as far as boards go it takes a while to read the grain, and try and get hard maple, red oak is o.k.  but hickory an d maple and white oak will be better, Bub
