Got a picture of the end grain? That bark doesn't look like yew that I'm used to but I'm sure it can vary from place to place.
-
I'd have to agree... that doesn't look like yew to me. Yew has a real reddish flakey type of bark.
-
Dosent look like yew? i saw some yew cut down with the same bark as this. i live in the UK but maybe like you say it varies.
-
Yeah, It doesn't look like the yew that we have here in the Pacific Northwest, But then I've never seen yew as it is found in the UK. Maybe some of your fellow UKers can assist in the identification.

Doesn't look like any yew i've ever seen.....

An end on shot would pretty much answer the question.
Yew bark can vary considerably...
I'm keepin' my powder dry til I see the end shot

I will go ahead and risk getting egg all over my powder. That ain't no yew. Tree identification is a great skill and will help your bow making and general wood working no end. I love the enthusiasm you bring to bow making, lets see if it can last the long winding road to making good bows. Remember this ain't no sprint more a marathon.

I have cut lots of European Yew and this does not look like it. It looks like a Sorbus species or Hazel nut. Markus.

Hope you don't mind me posting this pic, but it was on your other thread about this piece of wood. Personally not convinced, as it certainly doesn't look like English yew.

You really need to post a pic of the end face, that'll clear everything up in no time.

My first guess was Hazel also and the tape measure pic confirms it for me. Hazel will still make a great bow though......
