Title: Tree ID please
Post by: Far East Archer on November 06, 2007, 11:37:33 am
Hello  :),
There is this tree we got over here that my brother has made a bow from, but we never did ID it so I would like to know what it is. The bark is a whitish gray color, sometimes light brown. The wood has very fine rings and it has reddish heart wood and tan sap wood. When first cut this tree contains a lot of water and drips after cutting, similar to a vine of some sort. The wood itself seems strong in tension but not so well in compression, also its light weight so maybe around .50 - .60 sg. Here are some pictures of the leaves:

Sorry, don't have anymore pictures so I hope you will be able to tell from the ones I got. :-[

Kinda looks like a redbud. But its not the same kinda leaf I think , would be nice to have pics of the bark as well.
I looked through my Eastern tree book and found nothing that matched it.

Well I have my book out too.The closest thing I found that looks like it is Witch- Hazel,Southern Witch-Hazel,Hamamelis virginiana L. It grows in Nova Scotia to central Fl,E.Texas to S Ontario.

It is not witch hazel. I've got tons of witch hazel around here and it is all in full bloom. ;D   Where FEArcher is from will shed a lot of light as to what it is. Looks tropical to me but I've never seen it before.  Pat

Pat,He is from Nova Scotia I believe. It actually looked like an Orchid Tree to me,but I didn't know if it would live that far north.
