Hey everyone. I was walking in the woods and found some nice fairly clean cherry... it is nice and straight, no twist, and only a few tiny knots. But there is one problem..... its 60" long and I need it to be 72" for my ELB so I was thinking if I could trade it for some Osage around the same length. I am also looking for other woods (except Christmas trees :P) so if you have other staves im open to to trades. Im also looking for sinew and around 50 arrow shafts. Why not just use the yew for something else? 60" is plenty long enough to turn into a fantastic bow. Part of being a successful bowyer is being able to see a working bow of some description in a given piece of wood. You can't surely be ok with finding a stunning piece of yew (it looks perfect from your picture, although there isn't a photo of the end grain so not sure on sap/heart ratio) which is this straight and knot-free and paying for shipping, tax and the risk of it being ruined by sending it overseas just for another piece of wood? Good quality yew isn't that easy to come across in the UK so use it, don't give it away.
Post a picture of the end with a ruler/tape measure as reference. For all you know, it could be the right size for a billeted ELB. Bear in mind (and this is meant in no disrespect as we all start somewhere!) you haven't yet made a successful bow. To try and get a heavy draw-weight longbow/warbow (I believe you mentioned in a different post that your goal is to make a yew warbow?) with very little experience is pushing the limits quite a bit.
If it were me, I'd split the log (depending on it's width), seal the ends if they're not already sealed and set it aside for a year or two. Don't give it away or trade it for another piece from the US as it's just not worth the cost of shipping at this stage. Make lots more bows, ideally from staves if that's your end goal, and when you feel you can chase rings well, negotiate knots and pins and twists and weird sapwood boundaries, take this yew and have a go.

Oh my gosh. Are you seriously trying to pull our leg by convincing us that piece of wood is yew?! That log is NOT yew at all! Please, everyone, do not deal with squirrelslayer in any trades! This is just pure crap. Trying to get a full length osage stave (in the UK, ffs) for this mediocre stave of Sorbus or hazel is a pure rip-off.
The more of this troll's posts I'm reading, the more upset I become! >:(

Look I was miss lead thinking that this was yew. I havn't got round to changing it yet. Its acctualy cherry so im sorry for the confusion and I was definitely not trying to rip enyone of. Im obviously not experienced enough and if im considerd a troll then what does your post make you? If this thread upset you, you should have sent me a PM instead of trying to ruin my trading rep ( or Whats left of it ) ok ill admit I made a mistake with wood ID and surly that can be forgiven, if not then does that mean we now live in a world where teens can't be forgiven for little things like this? Yew is a conifer, that will help you next time if you are trying to make sure it is indeed a yew tree.

You might want to be careful with the attitude SS, or no one is going to be helpful. Looks like you might not be that far now from not getting help.

Hey Squirrel, this is your bad beginning here coming back to bite you. The only person that ruined your credibility is you. Try to grin and bear it and make a serious effort to make amends. If you can do that long enough eventually it will get better. For the record, I believe this is an honest mistake born of inexperience. I am the worlds worst at id'ing trees, so I can easily understand how that happens. However, you really do need to be certain before you offer for a trade. Furthermore, any wood you get your grubby fingers on at this time should be stashed away at this time to let cure. If your abilities ever catch up to your enthusiasm, you will need a large stockpile of staves. Josh

I have had to bite my tongue on some of your posts but I need to say something . I started very young made a lot of dumb mistakes , and had no guidance except what I read . I think you need to slow down and make do with everything you have . I do not think anyone has a problem with you here just your posts are a little aggressive . when you ask for help listen to it and take it . I certainly do not have a problem with young people and I'm sure no one else here does . in fact most would love to see you make a nice bow. slow down, be humble , and I'm sure things will change . also try to remember you're in England and most of us are in the US so trading is not very realistic . I'm sure your country has plenty to offer in material

Don't be afraid to ask for help FIRST. Instead of jumping up & down and telling everyone you have yew to trade, maybe ask if you're not sure. That way, if you're not sure, you'll look a lot better than being wrong and then having attitude about it. There are many very knowledgeable people on this forum, and you will NOT pull the wool over anyone's eyes. Listen, learn, watch and ask... and you might just get somewhere! Good luck with your bow making!

This is quite hilarious. My advice. GOOGLE!! YOUTUBE!!!! People like me and you who are beginners need to try to figure out as much on our own as possible thru the web. When we can't figure out from there then ask. The difference between 2 oak trees is one thing but mistaking a conifer and a cherry tree is a whole nother ball game and then trying to trade it. Just be careful. Honest mistakes can ruin your rep just as easily as dishonest ones especially if they happen frequently. This is the most forgiving and helpful forum I have ever been on. All is not lost.

unfortunately for me ive never seen yew, or osage as a tree. although i should say, i do remember the time i thought the white cedar out in front of our house was yew lol.

not looking to make anything from cherry. i know beggars can't be choosers but im looking to trade this. i'd rather make some board bows if i can find some ash. and also i have to much maple in my store so this is just taking up space. SS

the maple i have 10 billits but theese are still seasoning. and there is no room its currently at a freinds house, hopefully it's still in the garage and not been moved outside :-\ SS

Hey, I did not take that picture. The purpose was to see if de other squirrel realizes that yew is a conifer. The point is the reddish bark and the needles.

I kinda put bow-making on the back burner a lot, but I shoot each and every day.
For at least an hour.
I can hit a 12 inch target from 30 yards easy.
With a 55 pound bow, full draw @28.
I am used to getting confused with other people and taking carp over something stupid.
Lets just get on with life and forget.
Things happen. I mistook a poplar for a hickory once. I have also cut Arbore Vitae instead of ceder.
