I think it depends on the person and what your trading, you could trade a really nice draw knife or even nice hatchets and such for yew staves, if they are the old kind in good condition, the stuff that lasts for a hundred years and still works you would be much more likely to get a bite, otherwise your going to need 5 nice staves of good wood like osage or something(actually with osage its probably 2-3 osage per yew, or if you are one of those king-worshipers >:D you would think its 1-1.) basically you would need probably 5 or 6 maybe 7 nice maple that has amazing grain and no knots on the back for a good yew stave, since you live in england i would look around and call arborist because they can become your best friend if you give em a bit of money for your pickings of staves(like 5$ or less a stave) or just pay them per visit ect. they will be very happy to deal with you if you are generous in giving them compensation for their time and willingness to work with you.

I should mention, the reason yew staves are SOOOO expensive is that they take YEARS to grow, some will be 200+ years old and only be 6 inches in diameter, or less. Vs osage that take 20-25 years to yield a 10-12 or bigger trunk that will yield many more staves than the yew tree. so lets put it this way, if people in general sell osage for 50-100$ you can expect to pay easily 175 or more for yew staves. for high priced staves like yew, you would be better off getting them yourself via private property youve asked permission to cut from, or from a very good deal that you can offer.

YIKES KID! Your insane! Nautical history ( and trust me, I know, I'm a Hawkins, and was in the Navy ) is nothing to go trading off, getting rid of, or treating lightly. Tools like that, with that type of history ought to be cherished and used. If I had yew, I would give it to you for free so long as you promised to keep those in your family. Anyways, dont do it, you will ( or somebody else will ) hate yourself for it in the future.

Hey everyone.  Was on my 60 mile hike today and I found... YEW!!!!!!!!!! Except there is one problem.  I wanted to make a 70" yew warbow. The branch I have is really clean and has a slight oval shape (not round) the main problem is that it is 60" long, its a bit short for me so I want to possibly trade it for sinew, Osage, or maybe some longer yew? I will ship it to the U.S. if needed. If your interested shoot me a PM. Thanks,  SS
