Title: Red Oak tiller check
Post by: ionicmuffin on April 08, 2013, 11:56:40 pm
So heres my next attempt at a red oak bow. The red isnt bending, the green is bending a bit, the blue is bending a bit more than green, but i think the fades are doing too much work. What do you guys thing?

ok, so my question then is, because the thickness is even should i remove from the belly until it looks even? this is a pyramid style by the way.

Yes you should take some from mid limb on both

On pyramids i remove wood from the corners, the belly ends up i bit rounded.

ok, well this is where im at at the moment, close to 50 at 26, low brace of half an inch. The arrow represents a slightly hingy area that i marked not to touch. hows it looking now?

i think this helps a bit, looks like the left side is doing good, the right side is hinging where i said, and the outer needs to bend more, maybe also a tad on the fade on the right.

I dont think its a hing, i think its an illusion. It looks like there is a dip in the side. Try focusing on the back only and it  goes away. Maybe its just me. The fades do need a little more bend.

maybe your right, i just added the picture that didnt post. I am done for tonight, but if its all good to go i will be bracing, if not ill work on it some more. probably will go for a 4 inch brace an see where it stands from there.

The Bow is bending a lot it seems for it not to be strung at brace height by now. I would brace it at 5" and start weighing it. Red Oak can loose its weight fast. Weight it now at Brace Height and see where you are, so you dont come in way under your desired weight.
Tiller looks good.

Don't pull a bow  26" on a short string. When the tips move 6 below the handle it's pretty much ready to brace. Depending on the bow, I got to full brace by 8" of tip movement.

Now brace the bow and see what the tiller REALLY looks like.

don't touch the fades, get the outer on the right and mid outer on the left and get'em caught up and get that thing braced muffin, your not that far off, Bub
