Heres a little light weight buckthorn bow I just finished up and shot in. 58" ntn and around 30# @ 24". This stave has a real nice
color and grain so I finished it with tru-oil only, no stain or dye finish. Bottom limb has a 10" section at the end where the back
is concave. That area is non bending because of the problem there but the bow shoots smooth and quiet with no handshock.
Heres some pics;

Here is the concave area in the bottom limb;

That's a cool little bow. I can't wait to get back to WI in June and cut some buckthorn. Sounds like a good wood.

Sweet looking bow, Greg. Nice bend.
-
Just a question, why couldn't you make the belly convex in that stiff area to keep the thickness taper even across the limb? Nice little bow though :)
-
Nice looking bow Greg, it seems Buckthorn has a knack for giving you a concave somewhere in the limb. I've never seen that coloration on the back of buckthorn before.....beautiful :)
-
Love to see them bend like that, right down to the way yer ears open up at the end there. Dont see nothing wrong with her lines neither, really nice bow right there. Man you and Kenny got 'em bendin real fine!!!

Wow really nice bow, that color is niiiice! Good bend too!

Thanks ksnow, give buckthorn a try its great stuff
Thanks Kenny
TactialFate, belly was scraped convex and thickness taper evened and checked with calipers. Still couldn't get any bend through that area though, limb cross section shape just made it to stiff there. Had the same problem with my first buckthorn bow and thinned
the similar area on that bow in attempt to get it bending and had a tension break. Decided not to push this one. ;)
Thanks Cody, I think the color may have come from letting it season for about 10 months with the bark on.
Thanks Rich
Thanks Zion

That shape of limb will be stiff that's just the way it is! That tiller is perfect in my opinion for what you had to work with great job I think it is really nice!

Nice looking Buckthorn, Greg. I have a generously gifted stave in my shop just waiting for me to get at it.

Nice little bow there!
I like the warm color combination of handle and wood. This is a really pretty stick!
-
That's a sweet looking bow Greg. I am looking forward to bartering for some of that buckthorn. It is beautiful wood.
-
That's a sharp lookin piece of work there! Soy's got some of that buckthorn for me to try. I can't hardly wait to get my grubby fat fingers on it to try it out! Once again, nice work! Josh

Great looking bow!
how thick was the parent tree?

Thanks you to everyone for all the nice comments on this bow. Still trying to get a 50#+ bow out of this buckthorn, the wood can
handle the weight and more as others have proven, I just keep messing around to long trying to even out tiller lately and end up
with underweight bows. :o Been happening pretty regularly and not just with buckthorn lol. This little bow is fun to shoot though
and the wife and I took turns shooting it in yesterday. I put quite a few arrows through it and she was good for about nine arrows.
Shot good for her but she shoots so seldom that 30#'s wears her down fast. ;D
Again, thank you all for the nice comments.
To Pekane; this came from a 6"-8" dia. tree, this wood grows with so much character that it often is hard to find a couple usable
staves even from a tree of that size. I did manage to get two bows from that tree though.
-
nice looking bow. I need to get some buckthorn. It looks like a beautiful wood.
thanks for sharing.

Great work! I bet your fingers are sore from using that goose neck scraper. ;)

I like the natural look of it and the convex on those buckthorn amazes me. You did good on it.Tiller looks great. My wife has a hard time with shooting anything over 30# too but thats what I got her shooting so its still fun for her. Danny
