Title: Couple o' Shootin Sticks
Post by: Shooter on November 03, 2007, 08:20:25 pm
I do a few different styles and really like a minimalist approach

Here's a r/d

Hickory back, unknown species belly, ash riser
66" o/a
64" n-n
47#@26"
braced to 7"

Nice bows!!! They're both beauties. When you say unknown belly wood, what exactly do you mean? If you made these, don't you know what kind of wood you used? Did you use clear epoxy or glass over the lams?

Hey... did you shoot that door behind those bows with a shotgun, or has it been an arrow back stop??

adb3112, glad you like em. Thanks.

I'm not positive on the belly wood because it was in amongst a bundle of planks I bought at a garage sale that was labeled "exotic wood". It looks and feels a lot like canary to me, but it doesn't smell like the canary I've worked with in the past. Canary has a very distinctive odor that was absent with this stuff. I just didn't want to say without being certain.

No glass or epoxies on any of my bows. Just oils and stains.

I used to make bows out of wood and fiberplastics years ago, but I've moved as far away from synthetics as I can get in the last few years. I've admitted that I have an addiction to TBIII, though, and that's not likely to resolve itself any time soon ;)

The shed makes a great backstop

So... which is it? Shotgun or arrows?
I admit to an addiction to TB3 myself. It's a wonderful glue. Very strong and more or less waterproof.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

Sorry the pics are such poor quality, btw. I'll try to post better pics of a newly finished r/d tomorrow

Took a few pics showing some of the detail on each bow, but my photog skills are still pretty lame.

Wow, some exceptional work here!

That static recurve has an Asiatic feel to it, with the tips you used, look like syrrahs (or however you spell it).

Great looking bows.  Loved you humble picture - we've all been there! Got both of your bows bookmarked for November Backed Bow of the Month.
If you ever find out what species you used for the belly wood, let us know.

Thanks again, guys 8)

OldBow, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's canary.  ;)

I burned some shavings today and it did have a hint of that sandalwood-like smell. It just doesn't have the odor when it's cut or scraped hot. The extractives may have 'seasoned out' before I got to it. The pieces I had to work with were about 2x2 and well warped so it was probably laying around for a while. The grain patterns are a lot more linear and uniform than any canary I've seen, so the jury's split.
