Title: Osceola Gobbler
Post by: Ryan_Gill_HuntPrimitive on April 01, 2013, 05:13:14 pm
Well, I have been diligently hunting with my bow since the opener. I missed a jake that was kinda a rushed shot. I have been  hunting all brush blinds, no pop-ups and let me tell you it is a real chore to get a bird killed....  I have had about 8 Gobblers in shotgun range but nothing that would yield an honest bow  opportunity.  I haven't hunted birds with a shotgun in over 2 years..and still have not killed one.  This morning I hunted 5 hours and had 3 "shotgun" chances but was bow hunting...  I needed some shotgun therapy so I went home and got my Dad's old Ithaca 20gauge and some high brass upland game loads no.6 shot  and killed this big gobbler 3 minutes into my hunt... apparently it is a good day to be out hunting....birds are everywhere today.    But Now my lust is satisfied for the year and I will get back to the bow hunting..  Bow hunting is way too hard and gun hunting  is way too easy.  ;D

oh yeah   18.5 lbs    10inch beard and 1 3/16 hooks

Yeah I love the Ithaca guns. I have a 12ga too, but My Dad used to always tell me to use his 20 gauge but I never did. Now that he is gone I decided maybe the 20 deserved a day as well... yup he was right, it was a nice experience. He killed his first bird at age 16 with an Ithaca 16ga with a low brass shell

Congrats!  That's a beautiful turkey.  We've got a few more weeks until our season starts up.  I can't wait.

Way to go, Ryan! :) Those wing feathers look like a Hybrid, Osceola/Eastern. Can you post a picture of the primaries ? I'm curious of the cross breeding. I got one of each with one shot a few years ago with a BP shotgun,,, got me to thinking about the boundaries the State laid out for them.
