Me and a buddy of mine got the idea to use this easter Friday to sling a few arrows at our local 3D field range….a perfect opportunity to take some pics, drink a brew and get a fire going;-)
I switched between my “go too” Elm pyramid and my newly finished “Hjarnø” inspired Elm leverbow after lunch…just to get a feel for how it would compare, and to get some pics. Its wych elm, 66” and 50# @ 28”. I tried to make it roughly according to the specs of the recent Hjarnø find. The stave was rather deflexed and one tip reflexed. So instead of going for a straight design like the Hjarnø, I opted for flipping the other tip and also tried to straighten out some of the deflex (the latter proved difficult as you will see).
The working parts have been heat treated and as on all my wintercut elm I have left some of the cambrium layer (just for looks). Nocks are wrapped jute cordage, finish is Danish Oil.
First some shot “shots”;-)

thanks for all the nice words....its allways nice to go shooting with friends:-)
My post might have been more appropiate in the around the campfire forum, I can see it might be a bit data heavy....but then I would have to split things up;-)

Congrats on completing the Hjarno leverbow. I would really appreciate it if you would share the dimensions. Did you make it from a wych elm stave or a sapling? How did this leverbow compare with the pyramid also shown in this post? Again, a real nice pair of bows.

That is my biggest problem....I cant really get the 15 hours+ lever design to outperform my 5 hour pyramid. This "Hjarnø" bow shoots sweetly tho...very low stack and no hand shock. It was made from a stave to get it as wide as the original (5-6 cm at the widest). Total length is 66" and lever to working limb ratio is about 1/3 as on the original. I want it so badly to outperform simpler designs and I'll keep at it (If Blackhawk can, then I can learn;-).
One thing is for sure...while leverbows look simple, they a leap in complexity to excecute compared to "simple" flatbows. My impression is that the levers and tiller have to be JUST right for it to gain just a little advantage over pyramids.....but they are fun to make, and pleasing to the eye;-)
Sorry I dont have more detailed dimensions atm.
Cheers
