this third one kicked our butts....it got caught up standing straight...daves saw got pinched....we finally got the tree off the stump n daves saw out but it still wouldn't fall....so we used a come along at the base of the trunk to help it along....but still it didn't wanna go down all the way as you can see here in the pic....we eventually lopped off the tree next to it it was hung up on and then had to start cutting the tops off for it to go all the way down to the ground....and then the damn thing did not want to be split bouncing wedges left n right...I finally stepped in and showed it whos boss  >:D

Looks like the Shaggin Wagon had some good ERC logs as well. Pleasure meeting you Chris and hope to get some bow time with you at the Classic. It was a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to the Moontree Farm Rendevous next year.

Man, this weekend was just tooooo much fun.  That LOAD OF GOLD wore us out.  Good thing the youngest of the bunch, DLH, took charge of the splitting maul or us old guys might still be out there pounding a wedge.

I must have been doing something wrong.  Here is my stash of wood I brought home.  Unlike Blackhawk, I got a little better mileage on the way home than I did on the way down  ;)     Hey Blackhawk, I didn't see any Vine Maple in your pile of bow wood  >:D

Here is another picture of what I was working on.  Its like that pretty girl in school, you know she's going to break your heart but you have to try anyway.

Outlaw, you may have to sneak back down to fill up your truck.  But, we'll have to get DLH up here, too.  He's a log splitting machine.

Here's a few pics I got of the action.  .  .

People came from miles around to hear Clint talk about chasing rings on nasty staves (even Dave's dog was amazed at his skill)!

And finally, an example of some of the fine shooting that took place (one of the few I hit).

Great pics guys...............and chickenhawk. Those mini gathering are the best, I love 'em. Nice of you to allow all those wa-hoo's in your home for a weekend Dave.
Title: Re: the central kentucky gathering(moontree shoot)
Post by: hedgeapple on March 25, 2013, 10:45:38 am
Pearly, they may a bunch of wa-hoos, but they are some of the best wa-hoos a person could meet.  The knowledge, tips and techniques one can learn from these some gatherings is amazing; even from the newbies who have very few bows under their belts can bring alot to the table.  I watched DLH work around a little limb/nipple on his bow, now I think I can do that when needed.

Wapiti, point out different trees around my farm that I didn't even know I had.  The list goes on.  It was simply an amazing weekend.

Thats why I sit around ALL winter waiting for the gatherings to start, I love them. So much to learn from so many people. Ive said it before, time in the saddle doesnt count for much. You can learn from anybody at anytime if your eyes are peeled. I may just have to add KY to my events list for 2014, unless of course full blown yanks aint allowed!

Chris and Clint you were both a great help with that stave I started on this weekend if it doesn't work out I still have have learned things I can apply to the next. Nice doing a trade with you Clint hope that makes some good handles for ya and if you need anymore let me know. Steve I agree with Tracy that yew bow was amazing and your carp story was awesome too. I enjoyed listening to Steve, Dave and Greg sharing their fishin stories until early in the morning haha. Tracy nice doing some knapping with you and talking about rocks had a good time and hope to do it again in May. Ozzy can't wait to see your bow finished. It was nice meeting everyone and hope we can do it all again next year.

hey Blackhawk, Dave and the guys @ the moontree shoot,
Been working on that snakey osage bow that popped and cracked when I pulled it back in the work shop.  It started out at about 58# @ 28". First thing I did was put about 3" of reflex in it and then added some thin goat rawhide.  It did have a bad hinge in it right where it cracked.  I wanted so bad to have a bow at Daves  to shoot I think I rushed the tiller the first time.  I took my time this time and worked around the hinge, also keeping the other limb at the same level.  It wasn't long before the hinge disappeared and with NO pops or cracks.  ;D .  Thanks Blackhawk for laying your hands on it and appling some superglue.  I think your touch did the trick.  At the moment,  it shapes up to 47# @ 28" and I just got through shooting about 24 arrows with NO problems.  :) :).   I hope to shoot it a couple of hundred times before the classic,  add some skins and bring it to the classic to show you guys.
Dave.......... thanks again for having everyone,  and blackhawk for laying your hands on the bow. ::)
See ya,
DB

Bill, that is awesome.  I was so afraid that bow was firewood.  I'm glad you proved me wrong.  Now where are the pictures? :)

I need to aplogize to some of you.  I've been raving, a rightfully so about the gift of a bow from blackhawk, that I've felled to post pics of the other wonderful gifts I recieved at the gathering.  I told someone, that I should have a gathering once a month.  It was like Christmas.  And just like Christmas I was so busy admiring and appreciating the gifts that I probably confused who gave me what.  So this is my best attempt to remember who gave me what.  If I crossed up the names it only because I'm old and forgetful and it was a bit hectic at times.

Osage Outlaw presented me with a nice little knife.  It was just the second one he's made.  So, I'm very honored by it.

Tracy and Chertle gave me two points obsidian points they pounded out in the short time they where here.  You guys have to plan to stay longer next year.

Wapiti gave me a couple maple staves.  I've really been wanting to try some maple.  And a sassafras stave that's going to be an experiment with hickory backing.  Since Joe, was here in an official compacity, he pointed out trees I didn't know I had and gave me several bags of food plot seeds.  My quail thanks you so much, that is if those pesky rabbits don't eat them all.  haha

Now here is where things get fuzzy.  These items were gifted to me while I was in a crazy part of my day or was just brain dead from all the excitement.  So, if I have it wrong PLEASE tell me.  And know that I really do appreciate them.

Danza Bar gave me a much needed hickory stave.  I just feel nekkid without a hickory stave in the pile.

Greg brought a bundle of river cane.  Are they seasoned enough for me to make arrow for the Classic?

Now, this gift is very appreciated because my method  of making bow strings usually end with way too much waste or too short.  But, it was also given to me at a time when several folks were leaving and I was finishing up a demo on my way of doing a 2-fletch arrow.  But, I think this gift was from Ozzy.  I've already drilled a hole in the wall, glued in a peg and drilled a hole in the string jig so it will be safe from my clutter.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful gifts, but mostly for coming to this little event.  The friendships and bonds started that weekend will last a life time, I'm sure.  I can't wait for next year.

Bill..I thinks you should give the top limb some more scrapes..its a lil stiff after fixing your bottom limb

That's quite a gift list Dave...and just shows what kind of people hang around on this site...you won't find a better bunch of folks anywhere else

I got the bow I made down there all shot in yesterday...n its got two coats of oil on her so far...I had to take the week off n recoop n catch up with family time....I'm thinking of naming her moon tree or something along those lines...maybe yeller moon tree? Finished pics in a couple days...turned out nice.

Thanks for having us all Dave.  I'm already looking forward to next years gathering.

Bill, did you throw that hole in the bow stave that we were looking at in the back of my truck?  When I got home I found a cool stave and I don't remember where it came from.  Of course I don't remember a whole lot from Friday evening so maybe I traded somebody for it.  Oh well, its a nice stave so thanks to who ever gave it to me.

Chris, I'm looking forward to seeing it with lip stick.  How did it shoot?  My only requet for the weekend was not grabbing a target and lights and making you shoot that bow Saturday night.  I'm sure it wouldn't have taken much arm twisting.  ;)

Bill, I agree with BH.  It seems mostly stiff about 6" above the handle.  I'd do about 10 scrapes there first then re-check.

OO, sounds like you have a secret Santa.

Clint, sounds like you got a visit from the stave fairy!

Bill, looks like a keeper! I really like the curves in it.

Dave, I think you need to organize a bunny hunt with bows! I make a mean pot of rabbit gumbo and might enjoy flinging arrows at lagamorphs >:D I think Dutch apple cobbler would compliment the gumbo ::)

BH- cant wait to see the finished bow!

Tracy, I've flung hundreds of arrows at bunnies on the farm.  But I seem to miss them by a hare.  bu-dum-bump.   ;D  The problem with a bunny hunt is it's season is during archery deer season.  I suppose I'll have to limit out early this year and plan for a bunny hunt after rifle season in mid-Nov.

Dave, unless I'm mistaken, the cane is switch cane. It should be good to go. It was cut in December and has been stored indoors. It will need sorted through, though.
