Title: Whats in your quiver?
Post by: sleek on March 24, 2013, 06:39:36 pm
Just a curious question, but what all do you take with you when you hunt? How many arrows, broad head, field points, knife, etc..

When I go out, I usually take 3 field points arrows, 3 broad heads, a razor blade, my K-bar, super glue, a spare bow string, extra cordage, a candle, lighter, magnesium striker, little bag of dryer lint ( if the weather is wet, some tallow for waterproofing the bow ) a flash light, and old castnet, a bit of fishing line and hook, a baggie of mixed nuts, and a water bottle.

Super glue is for bad cuts, razor and knife are for obvious cutting duties, spare string is just incase, I dont wanna have to go home because of a carelessly handled broad head. The candle and lint make great camp fire starters. I use the cast net to throw in the grass and catch locust and crickets for fish bait ( I fish by a river that feeds a nearby lake ) and often set out a line tied to a stick stuck deep in the bank. I came back to a fish more often than not ( usually a cat though sometimes a turtle ) and like to cook up the fish when I am done for the night. I usually sleep in my truck as its an hour back to my house from my spot. I like to be out for at least 2 nights, 3 if I can get time off work...

3 or 4 arrows with broad heads and a knife.  That's about it.  I only deer hunt and I do that on my property so I don't need much.

On a normal hunt my quiver 3 arrows, two broadheads and a blunt. My backpack has my rattle bag, grunt call, and a bottle of diluted vanilla extract, a bottle of homemade scent blocker, 1 can of skoal straight, two bottles of water and my knife. I hunt 175yards from my back deck so don't lug a lot around.

It is an attractant, it has brought several curious nannies in to me, checking out that sweet smell. Used it in Ohio a lot just brought the habit south when I came. Not good in the early season here as the yellow jackets like it more than the deer.

4 (or 5) broad heads and 2 blunts in a plains style quiver this year. Didn't get a chance to use any of them though. I'm still pretty new to this hunting thing and I'm solo so I've got a lot of self teaching to do yet.

Also a possibles bag over my other shoulder or sometime's I'll just stuff my pockets. Oh, and my trust worthy RAT 5.

I'm working out an idea of using a side quiver and giving it some MOLLE webbing so I can just strap stuff on.

2 Broadhead arrows and a field tip for a practice shot. I dont go "survival" hunting, I just walk out to a tree and climb up it for a few hours, then go back home.

Typically I carry 3 broadheads, 3 Field Points, extra string (that has been stretched and shot in), extra field points, string wax, hotmelt glue, and tapering tool for quick fixes. Apart from the quiver I carry my pocket knife and Hunting knife.

Nothing. I visualize an imaginary arrow and use the power of my mind to do the killing  >:D But I still need to take a quiver and bow, because otherwise I'd have nowhere to put my imaginary arrows, and nothing to shoot them out of. I cook my pasta in a similar manner.

...
...

But in all seriousness, I usually run with 3 arrows all with broadheads. We can't hunt anything with field points or blunts here, not even rabbits or squirrels  :(. I usually have my pack too which has my survival kit, a hyrdration pack, some snacks and whatever else I feel the need to bring along.

For an Arizona deer hunt......I carry a 6 arra hip quiver in it are, 4 BH's and 3 judo tipped (one is piggy backed). 2 extra BH's duct taped under foam pad.
In my ROCKY MTN fanny pack an extra string, knife, multi-tool, bow wax, stick of hot melt, a lighter, some arti sinew string, extra-finger tab, Zip ties, 2.5 qts water or more depending on hunt season, a small mill file, DMT knife sharpener, GERBER ex-change blade saw, tiny tube of super glue, 10ft of para-cord. Thats just whats in the pockets of the fanny pack! In the main compartment a fleece pullover, 10X binos and sometimes 15X bino with a tripod. Upper compartment camera and lunch. Lunch usually consists of a hand full of elk jerky strips and a couple sticks of pepperjack cheese packs and a PBJ bagel ;).
My outings usually requires at least 5-6 miles of walking/hiking and long hours glassing over open terrain.I know I'm missing couple of more items. 8)

3 arrows.  I have been hunting with a bow for almost 35 years and have never needed more than two arrows and the only time I needed two was for a grey squirrel....tough little guys.  I travel pretty light and keep it simple.  All grownups should have a knife and a lighter in their pocket.

4 or 5 broadheads and one field point, everything else goes in my pack, if any of you saw dual survival in the Klamath that's the kind of terrain I have to hunt most of the time, got to bring extra stuff incase you fall and break a couple arrows or something

I hear you bubby.  I am always within cell phone service (which kinda sucks) and never more than an hours walk from the camphouse, so it isn't a big deal to travel light.  The greatest challenge with Alabama bow season weather is not getting bug bit or sun burned!  In that kind of topography I would go ahead and ruck up too.

Kinda like suntanning in North Dakota...it's walking a fine line between sunburn and freezerburn.

I tend to just carry a few arrows in my quiver, it's the stuff in the backpack that starts to resemble the Beverly Hillbillies loading loading up the truck and heading to California.

Frostbite?  you mean Ice Tan  8)

I still need to build something to go in my quiver.  Odds are I'm going to cheap out and tie up some trade points to tomato stakes or homebrew dowels, and have a nutter on hand in case I come across squiggles.  Other than that, my belt knife, a buck folder, and a pocketful of smokehouse almonds.

My quiver usually has 4 stone tipped cane, bamboo or dogwood arrows with self nocks and eastern woodland two feather fletch. A dogwood blunt or two similar to my hunting arrows and probably some leaves and grass, maybe a few twigs. ;)  Josh

If you were hunting any more au natural you'd be wearing mocs and a bunny fur banana hammock.  And please feel free to do so, if so inclined.  Here is where I will finally draw the line and NOT ask for you to post pics.  Some things CANNOT be unseen.

I wish it were legal to hunt with stone points here.  I'm mighty jealous of you on that point, Josh.

Oh my! That's a visual I don't even want!  However, If I were to try it, I probably wouldn't need my bow to hunt.  I could just walk up to the deer while they rolled around on the ground laughing and just jab em with an arrow!  I do Hunt in mocs, but that's as close as I plan to get to that get up! ::) Josh

This thread has given be so many good ideas for hunting garb.   >:D  I'd say more but I don't want to be the one to completely throw this topic out the window.

Hehe, this is a fun topic... Hey Jw, here in Oklahoma, you can hunt with BONE points if you want. Wood to if you were so inclined, but of course we will all want to be humane.
