What are you going to do with them all?
Hamish.
-
I usually cut my osage earlier but running behind this year the wood borers are hatching out this week but will cut everyday till end of month
-
Now thats more like it ;) that's what I like to see :)
-
Now thats a nice load of hedge! Should make some nice corner posts. ;D
-
You keep it all to yourself, or give some away, sell some....? ::)
-
Come to the Tenn Classic and see where some of it goes. 8)
-
Man I wish I could make it out there......need to get my hands on some of that gold. Nice Haul Ojack!
-

I'm gonna have to dig through some of that at the Classic.
-
going to cut another load today >:D found this farm 2 mile from my new house I cant sleep till it all in my stave shed, people here think I am crazy for cutting all this hedge good for nothing they say ;)
-
It has been a while since you posted any of your Osage Cutting Pix.
Glad to see you back at it. ;)
Two Questions:
Do you ever cut any Osage Firewood???
Do you use Osage in any of the rustic furniture that yall been making???
Thanks
David
-
I bet you did a Tiger Woods fist pump when you saw the end of that log in the above picture. It has the kind of rings we are all hoping to see when we drop an osage tree.
-
Son of a..... Why can't I find that sort of haul!
God hates me.
-
yes I do use osage in some of the rustic furnature,,and I heat my house with osage scrap,,,, I really hit the jackpot today I will post more photos this evening,,my new wife has never seen osage fever,,she is trying to find a cure, she is not having any luck
-
Wow nice haul. wish i had a place to cut that much :)
-
here are photos of some I found today,, ;D
-
these are some of the cleanest osage I have ever seen,,the two larger trees will have about 75 staves each
-
Mike, are you planning on getting any of those 2" suckers? I got one from you a few years ago at the Classic and I made 2 killer bows from it.
-
I have got tons of them cut,,fresh and some that are 3 years old
-
For now, I'll take one of each. Who know when we get to Twin Oaks. ;)
-
You guys make me sick lol. I have spend $20 to get a hickory board and here you guys just go out and cut all the wood you want for free lol.
-
trust me its not free,,i pay the farmers well ,,plus I loose a lot of blood and sweat it is very hard to find clean osage
-
It costs one way or another, blood and sweat as well as helping the land owner one way or another.
One of the landowners I cut Osage on wants any of the wood I'm not saving cut into firewood for him and another I work on his equipment when he needs help . It's worth it though , word gets around when you keep your brush piled up and clean up when your done and that opens other places up in the future .
-
OJ I feel ya on the back but what I would be dreading is debarking and prepping all those beauties. Thats where the real work begins. I guess your abs will be six packs by the time your done. Tell us how you survive that marathon event. I'd like to know. Danny
-
Looks like I will have to have carpel tunnel surgery in the near future, debarked and removed too much sapwood with my draw knife from that "Free" osage I collected over the last 17 years, really took a toll on my aging body.
Don't know how Mike stands up to the rigors of his profession. I get cold chills just thinking about all the work he has ahead of him turning those great logs into one ring staves.
-
I know what u mean I feel old,,had a long day today I cut and split and hauled out a hundred staves trying to beat rain fri..my fingers are bent in the shape of drawknife,, I will post some pics this eve, more splitting till church time,
-
LOL, I want to try osage sometime.
Trade? I cannot make it to Classic(I cant drive:(), I live in Northern Kentucky.
VERY nice rings on that piece!!!!
I like BL cause I got Access to it!
Where do you guys find/cut osage?
-Squirrel
-
I've done my share of cutting/splitting/debarking/chasing hedge, and its definitely a ton of work. But I don't have any six-pack abs to show for it. Just something more like a keg in that area.
-
way cool , i wish more people would post this kind of stuff. just beautiful.
chuck
-
long day in the osage woods,,got about 120 staves cut got about 52 bows out of one tree,, cant wait till tomorrow to hit them again
-
DUDE! please you going to make me cry! thats SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much osage!
-
Trade Please?
I want osage....
Where on earth can osage be found in that quantitiy?
-
Im seriously considering doing some major trading with you to get my hands on some of that stuff!
-
Keep posting them pics mike..and keep making these young whipper snappers greeeeeeeeeenwith envy ;)
-
Beautiful looking wood Mike, you hit the mother load on that one. Lots of work right there. See ya in a month or so. ;) :) He may have now but last time I seen Mike he didn't have 6 pack abs. ;) ;D ;D ;D
Pappy
-

-
Hey Jack, where are you at?
I'm gonna go to northeast kansas in 1st week of june.
Anywhere close?
I couldn't get that lucky I'm sure. I guess I'll have to cut my own tiny supply to carry back on the SUV with the wife and kids :o ;D ;D.
-
nah im fine with you posting more pics, just letting you know that most of us that dont have access to any osage outside of trading are considering mobbing the states that do have osage just so we can get some >:D ;D  ::)
-
He may have now but last time I seen Mike he didn't have 6 pack abs. ;) ;D ;D ;D
Pappy
no six pack abs here :'( but pappy I have lost 50 pounds,, the hard way,,diabetes found out last may
  This is a classic example of a joke Backfiring. I need to lose about 20-30 too. Hope I don't have to go on the diabetes diet. I'll take weight watchers instead.
-

I take it you've never had a physical therapist work on you. The pain leaves no room for naughty thoughts.
-

Just looking at all that Osage makes my back hurt. ( In a good kind of way :D)
Mike:

WHERE???
OneBow (who lives in southwestern MO)
-
Nice haul. I was lucky enough to locate a couple dozen osage trees just 20 mins from the house....which is rare here in Oregon. Now I just have to go knock on the door.
-
you need lots of osage to pick over only 1 out of a 1000 is good enough for bows,,it takes 1000s of trees to cut these loads,,
-
where in tennesee? My cousin lives near Bristol i wonder if he has that much osage near him? might have to go visit him. ;)
-
man, although im still jealous i think i found my own stash of wood. :P ::) ;D
-
Thanks Mike. Its got lots of bumps and such too. Cool! 8)
-
here is a photo of todays load,, I think probably close to 300 bows on this load,,i so tired I need a break,,have to stay after it,,i figure the sap will come up next week time to cut running out,
-
That may be the coolest picture I've ever seen!
-
had to check under hood,,that load was a strain on the old truck,,
-
Im so envious its a wonder the text dont come out green!
Jokes aside ,congrats to the motherlode!
Wish that stuff were growing here.
-
Great pictures, no easy job collecting that much osage. Seeing all that osage cut and split is making me wish I was your neighbor. ;D
-
I quess you can rest later osagejack. The fencing people here in southern Iowa earn they're keep too cutting hedge. It's young man's work for sure.
-
It is worth a trip to Tin Oaks just to lay eyes on Mike's wood.

You can tell by the big smile I am in osage heaven, a bow makers dream world.

-
Wow....shure is purdy....but it makes me sit in pain ,hands ,arms, and back! ;)
-
those are some great pictures eric,,that load was small,,everyone needs to come to the tn classic this year,,we are going to bring not only the biggest load of osage but the best and cleanest wood I have ever had,,got about 200 more staves today,,i forgot my camera,,today,,i think I am going to take a nap ::)
-
That does look like one of the best loads I've laid eyes on. We've got 6 or 7 nice 10-15" dia trees marked that need to get cut. I think were planning a little run next weekend to make it happen. I also noticed a north/south hedge row that has been bulldozed about 2 miles north of me. I need to get over there and see the owner before he starts pilling it up and see if there is anything in there worth saving. I'm sure theres one or two. Danny
-
better get to cutting the sap is coming up here in tennessee
-
you need lots of osage to pick over only 1 out of a 1000 is good enough for bows,,it takes 1000s of trees to cut these loads,,
Now you are starting to sound like one of those annoying yew wood cutters ;)
Wish I was headed to the TN classic. Maybe next year.
-
most guys that don't cut osage don't realize how many trees you go threw to get a good one,,i have very high standards when it comes to bow wood,,i have heard people say all osage is good,,thats not the case,,it really upsets me to see guys with poor quality osage,, I pride myself with getting the best osage I can to make those bows that bring a smile to there face ,I wish we had yew here in tn that would give me something to do on my day off,,, just kidding I don't take days off 8)
-
I like your high standards. I am getting ready to go see If I can cut this oregon osage I have located. What do you look for in a osage tree before cutting it? What makes you pass one up that might look good to the rookie?
BTW, That is a some impressive haul you have there!
-
the biggest thing I am looking for is quality of the wood,by this I am looking at earlywood late wood ratio I don't care is the wood is crooked or twisted,,snakey,, the only thing that matters is early wood latewood ratio,,every thing else can be fixed,,but if u start with bad wood there is not much room for improvement,, the best way I tell before cutting is the bark,, good wood has healthy bark,,once you see in you will recognize it,, another way is to cut a small wedge near the ground it wont kill the tree,,and you can see the grain,,i am headed to cut some osage now I will post u a pic of healthy osage tree and a photo of the rings,,will b later tonite b4 I post pic,,,hope this help
-
Now I love seeing a good osage harvest post. There is nothing better than seeing someone with a big pile of osage logs, or any kind of bow wood for that matter. But I can't decide if this post is showing a great winter of osage harvesting or if you are using this post just as free advertising for the osage you are going to be selling at the Classic. :-\
Seems to be a few people that only show up on here when they have a new DVD out or something else to sell.
-
I never tire of watching the harvesting bow wood. I found out with my last tree that I am over the hill for such activity but still find excitement in watching others and their search for treasure, be it cutting osage, prospecting for gold or looking for valuable antiques in an old barn.
Keep those pictures coming Mike. Any of us who have cut and split a truckload of osage on a 95 degree day down south(I have many times in my younger days) always get excited just looking at some really great wood and love watching the process to obtain it unfold.
-
carson here is a photo of the type os bark I am looking for,,to me it is what I call healthy looking bark,,it rarely lets me down,, and the other photo of the rings,, I am starting to get tired sooner,,i think I got maybe 75 staves today,,i plan on hitting it hard tomorrow,,snowing here today with 30mph winds,,made my eyes water,,getting to old,, not as tough as I used to be,,
-
here is the photo of todays staves, and one of the nice logs I found,, the pouland strikes again
-
That's A LOT of pretty yellow wood!
Wow.
Cipriano
-
I may not be cut out for this bow wood harvesting. On our property I only look for small trees up to a foot or so in diameter maybe a little more. I don't have the heart to cut down those Huge gnarly osage trees found on the old home places. They have too much history. It hurts my heart to see a +100yr old tree come down whether by mother nature or by pouland. Have you ever counted rings on some of the big boys? I'd be interested to know how old osage get.
-
I have counted rings on some bigones close to a 100rings,,i looked at one near Nashville the owner says well over 100year old its probably 4ft dia,, all the farms I cut osage on they are a unwanted tree,, I have there permission to cut any or all trees,, I will cut any size tree,,i like them around 20in I like the inside splits,,
-
some photos from today,,managed to get 60 or 70,, had a flat on 4wheeler couldn't haul them out ,,split some of the straightes and cleanest I have ever seen,,
-
photo of some nice second growth osage,,I think I put to much osage on the 4wheeler,,blew out a tire,
-
If you don't mind my asking, what kind of price will you ask for, for primo pieces at Twin Oaks?
-
The vast majority of really large diameter osage on our farm are on old home places. It is old plantation land. Lot of old long since gone home places. In these old home places you ALWAYS find buttercups, cedar trees and Osage trees. I can tell you before I even find the home ruble when I come to one. Another strange thing to me they typically are fairly void of undergrowth even after all these years.
I certainly wasn't putting you down for cutting them. I don't think you thought I was but I want to make sure. I love seeing the pics. I guess I just get sentimental. haha. I wish I was coing to the classic to see it in person. I'm waiting till fall to dig up some irises I found in an old home place under and osage tree. I wish they could tell me some stories because I know they have seen a lot.
Keep up the good work.
-
Dude, I think you need to have a sale on osage next year.
-
you guys are awesome, i know this thread is going to end, but i wish it wouldn't . thanks for posting
chuck
-
Nice job Mike, you have been busy it looks like, See ya in a month or so. :)
Pappy
-
been peeling staves all day,,going to split some this eve,,then hit it hard tomorrow,,i forgot how much I disliked peeling sapwood,,,
-
That looks like some sweet oasge...and a lot of it! I am going to cut yew tomorrow and my back is hurting already just looking at your pics.
-
this is why I like large trees inside splits ,,this chunk is part of one log,, took the inside split off first then split in half this is the most perfect osage I have ever seen,,clean wood splits so easy
-
I am just jealous of you all that have osage growing right by your houses. ;D
Congrats on the great harvest.
-
thank you I have truly been blessed, it have been a lot of work,,i still have about 45 logs I haven't split yet,, I am getting to old for this,, :D
-
great day in the osage woods managed to get out about 150 staves,,even though flat tire on atv broke handle in sledge, then saw tore up ,, >:( found one nice 6in dia perfect log but had to climb 8ft high to cut off,
-
found some very straight but large osage probably 30in at ground,,cant deciede to cut them or not :-\
-
How often do you sharpen that saw? That stuff will dull em quick! You might have to sharpen twice on that one tree.
-
Do you have to spray this wood for bugs? If so, with what? Just love looking at such fine bow wood.
-
that osage is hard forsure,, I do sharpen a lot,,as long as its green it cuts fine,,only gets hard when dry,,sometimes I spray with borer spray I get from coop,, most time I take bark off and seal,,i usually process so much osage at one time,i cant work all down to heartwood,,,,
-
todays load not sure how many on here but a lot,,my dad helped me and we got more done,,,had the old truck loaded down
-
THAT is a load of staves!!! :o :o You are an animal!
