Haven't posted one in a while. Mine are real simple anyways and probably don't impress most here.
Anyhow, here is a Hop HornBeam bow made from a 2 in sapling. Exceeds my 50# scale.
59 in, ntn
55#@26 in
2 in of set
This bow came out heavier than i wanted! I was eager to finish, and the way i tiller, i use a tillering stick until its bending even at 20 in, then i just scrape evenly along the limbs to reduce the weight.I test the weight by "feel". I had this one flexing in the handle at my full draw and so i called it a day and finished her up with a quick sanding, olive oil, and paraffin wax over that. Now ive shot it a few dozen times, i wish i had lessened the weight a bit. I like about a 40# bow.
My bows are inspired by Badly Bent,Gun Doc, half eye(i cant make em that short man!) and others who like these simple dbows. Im going to try and start making them shorter.....maybe about 56-58 ntn while still using saplings. Something about semi-short sapling bows really gets me.
I'll try to get some closeups later. Sorry the pics arent all that great. Sadly this is the last bow i'll be making for a while. Headed to Basic Training in 10 days.

It will fly by and you will be making bows again pretty soon. :)
I sure hope so. Im going to miss a lot of things, but i have to remember this is the best way to get myself on my own two feet so i can be self reliant.

Nothin wrong with that bow Dictionary. She's a beaut and you got good weight out of it. Sometimes the simplest are the most impressive (I for one am impressed) Just wait till you're out of basic and that 55 pounder will be nothin to pull. ;)
Thanks for your service.
-
really like the d bows my favorite style , nice bow with a good bend is allways impressive!
-
Real nice bend on that d-bow Dictionary, smooth! That length and draw weight is a perfect deer bow in my book. Hope when your done with your basic training you'll be posting more nice bows like this one. :)
Thanks for your service and take care.

great looking bow . You will be building again in no time. Good luck man.
-
Very well done young man! I'm flattered to know that I may have inspired something more significant than a hangover! ;) I'm very happy to hear that you've taken steps toward your future. If you can stay focused and make the best of it, I think you will look back on this decision as one of the best you ever made. The military certainly made a man out of this former juvenile delinquent. I wish you the best in your endeavours and hope to see many more sweet bows like this one being made wherever you are stationed. Josh

Those pics are cose enough for me to see you made a fine bow. Your tiller is great. Have fun and experience all the military has to offer.

Nice looking bend on that one. The full draw against the brick is your best pic. It looks real nice.

Sweet bend in that one. Do your absolute best every minute and best of luck.

-
Nice bow, and I hope the service experience is a great one for you. Thanks
-
Very nice bow and you got the most out of that one I'd say.Good luck with your future.
-
looks really nice. don't ever feel reluctant to share a bow!
I think simple is the best place to get rooted in bow-making, and often has more beauty to it .
I know about "set" though...all my bows I've made so far, have it, and though its a challenge, its not the end of the world.
Be careful out there
-
Nice bow, simple is sweet! Good luck and nothing better than setting your self up young for a good future. You will be thanking your self later.
-
Looks pretty good to me. Nice tiller and that's awesome that it came in good and heavy. It doesn't look like it should be that heavy, but it must pack a real punch.
-
The pictures make it appear to be a thin peice of wood, while it is quite thick and pulls a good weight. Im guessing at 55#. My scale only goes to 50 and it tops off the scale. I don't much care for higher weight bows. Accuracy is better at lower weights and they are more pleasing to shoot.
Thanks :)
