Title: Smoked Sinew?
Post by: Sasquatch on March 05, 2013, 11:48:25 am
I was at the feed store the other day and saw a package of 5 cow foot tendons(sinew).  It is smoked sinew  (not bull penis).  There are 5 in a package for 9$.  Each is about 1/2 in in diameter and about 8-9 in long.  I have already shredded some and it acts like the deer sinew i have.  Is that a good price and does it hurt the sinew if smoked?

It would at least taste good when you chewed it before application.

You could always buy you a red oak board, make a 55" eastern woodlands D bow and sinew the back with it and call it an experiment.  If it worked you would know, if not your out $20 and some time.

Heck!  I'd try it for sure!  And that is a good price if the sinew is raw.  I think they just dip in in smoky flavor, so it should be good.   ;D

It should work for the kind of bows most of us make here.  But an expert hornbow maker would prolly choke on his coffee after reading this.   :o

Should at least work for arrow wraps, right?

Yep, I would think so.  Wraps don't have to be super strong.

If your gonna use it for bow backing then I highly suggest degreasing it first

Most smoked items are soaked in a brine for a long time. The salt and induced grease oozing would make me hesitant. Clean sinew is so easy to come by, why risk it?

Holy crap...didn't even see that....its a 3000 post party for me...n hey pearly your about to hit the 4000 post party....lol....

Yeah that stuffs gotta be quite greasy...hence why it'll need a good washing...I personally wouldn't chance it either when clean sinew is easy to obtain

I was in a pet store with a younger coworker the other day and I talked him into seeing what the "bully stick" tasted like   >:D  After he did it I explained what it was.

I can talk him into doing about anything.  For 50 cents he found out the pinching power that a stag beetle has.

Did it draw blood?  Those things are strong.

It latched onto his nipple (I got to pick the spot) and he starts screaming and jumping around.  The beetle is floppin' like a giant nipple ring.  Best 50 cents I ever spent.  Night shift at a sewer plant gets pretty boring.

Sorry about distracting from your post Sasquatch.  I think you could trade for some better sinew than the pet store stuff but would work as a last resort as long as you cleaned it good.

No problem,  I like crazy stories. Besides your coworker reminded me of myself.  About the sinew i think that i will save the money for now. this stuff is really oily. thanks for all the responses.  Keep Building Boys.... ;)

I got some back sinew from a guy in the UPO of Michigan that came from a deer processor. The processor kept the sinew in his smoker(must have been cold smoke) until he had a bunch and Dana would pick it up. I've been using this sinew ever since and the smoke hasn't hurt anything. I do hydrate and wash the sinew in Dawn before bow backing but not for hafting and wraps. I just chew it for that and the smoke gives it a nice taste.  ;D

I get my sinew from the pet store. It's cheap at 2.50 a hank. Stuff I get isn't smoked. Just needs to be washed with dawn and hydrated like Pat says. Nothing wrong with it at all. I have seen some big stuff though (looks like Bovine backstrap) that looks way overcooked and is hard and brittle that would never work.
