Title: My new "viking-style" longbow
Post by: Eastman on February 28, 2013, 01:04:29 pm
I was inspired to make a bow like this after coming across the following texts:

''Thirty-six bows were also found on a buried boat at Nydam....and are made like English longbows...their lengths range between 66 to 77 1/2 inches'' -Traditional Bowyer's Bible vol2

''On the panzers,arows rattle
Where our Norse king stands in battle
From the helmets blood streams flow
Where our Norse king draws his bow
His bowstring twangs,it's biting hail
Rattles against the ring-linked mail.."  -From the Crooked Stick

So I really wanted to make myself a Norse/Viking style longbow, here she is:
Rawhide backed white oak board, 72'' n2n, 1 3/8 wide at the grip and a little under 1/2'' nocks.Stained with walnut dye and sealed with linseed oil and a homemade animal fat and beeswax blend. The flemish string for the bow is my second one ever made and man is it fun making flemish strings! 12 strands of B-50 with black-backed jackal string silencers.

She draws 43# at my draw length of 28'' and is a real pleasure to shoot. This is a very stable and forgiving bow when shooting and i'm definitely gonna use her in upcoming 3D shoots. Please feel free to criticise my tillering etc.. :P ;D

You did a fine job on all of it. I will say the upper fade is a bit stiff. The bottom has a nice arc to it.
