Getting back into hunting after a 25 year hiatus changes a lot of things. 25 years ago I shot a compound. Now that I am hunting again at age 60, I decided to go traditional and bought a Martin Jaguar 35# recurve. Then I discovered self bows. So, while my hickory is drying I decided to go ahead and build arrows.
Today I took my first arrow and shot it about 40 times into a target.
Here are the specifics:
32" shaft.
Self nock
16D nail point
Chicken feather fetched.
Two things.
I have never shot instinctively.
I have never shot my own arrow.
I am forever hooked now. And indebted to the wealth of wisdom here that helped me.

Fantastic! That's what it's all about. Welcome to the addiction. ;D

Ha Haw, SUCKER!
Kinda like the Hotel California, check out any time you want, but you will never leave now!

:)
Forgot to add. Weighed the arrows and my average is 600 grains.......is that about right for cane?

Not sure on cane someone that uses them will chime in. But hope ya have as much fun as I do. So far since December I am up to building 4 self bows and a dozen arrows out of red osier. They shoot as good as my poc at 25 yards.
Enjoy the addiction.

I am understanding that. More and more.

Congrats, hard to explane but there is nothing really like building and shooting your own stuff,it is something most people never get over once they do it and the vast majority never get to enjoy. :)

Congratulations! My first set I think were a little on the heavy side (I do not have a scale to weigh them), but out to 25 yards there are pretty accurate.

wait till you make youre own strings as well, with sinew or natural fiber.
there is nothing quite like zinging arrows you made from your own gatherings and your own bow and string too.
Most my bows and arrows have never strayed off the property. they grew up here .

So are you really surprised, we lied about the cookies here on the Dark Side?
Like J.W. said, you can never leave....... :o oh, and for another chain about your person, just get into rock breaking....... then you will be looking for bow wood, shaft material, string material, and knappable rock to boot. Soon..... you might be looking for a job, as some employers simply don't know the addiction is not a bad thing....... mostly..... ::) and they have no sense of humor when you use their time, and your lunch break to break rock, twist strings, scrape bows, and arrows, and have your work area, a mess of shavings, scrapings, and chips. :P ::)

About the only thing I have around here is quartz. From my understanding, that is not a good choice for breaking.
(cause the only thing it does is break)
