Title: Ladies Bamboo Backed Hickory Bow
Post by: PaleoNinja on February 20, 2013, 08:03:05 pm
Hi All,

Here's a bow I'm making for a friend of mine who said she wanted to try primitive archery.  It's Bamboo Backed Hickory 60"NTN just a spec under 1.25 inches wide at its widest.  It got glued up in a 4" reflex form and now holds about 1" of reflex. It's  40lbs at 30" I figure she'll take it to 26" where it's about 33lbs or so.  Red Stain on the whole bow.  Still haven't gotten to the handle.

Just a little disclaimer- I had gotten my wisdom teeth pulled about 6 hours before the Full draw photo so please excuse the silliness!

And here is the Recipient of the Bow very Happy with her Gift.  She literally walked around with it stringing and unstringing it for the remainder of the day I gave it to her.

Sweet! probably very fast for a small bow. Love that red stain. Did you scrape the boo so that it would take the stain or did you just leave it over the bow to dry?

Cool bow!
The unstrung profile says it all.
I can see why you made her a bow..... ;)

Again thanks for the Kind words guys.

Cesar: I used a cabinet scraper to remove the waxy outer skin of the bamboo til I got down to the dark fibrous stuff.  It still didn't take the stain quite as well as the hickory did, but once it was sealed up it was fine.  I'm definitely going to start staining all of my bamboo backed bows now, it just looks cool!

Thanks Mike, the bow holds about an inch of reflex which I'm pretty happy with.  And you're right it's not hard to find the motivation to make a bow when it's for a pretty girl. :D
