Title: International shipping question
Post by: KShip85 on February 19, 2013, 11:02:49 pm
Hey all, I was just wondering if there are any regulations on shipping a snake skin backed bow overseas.  Trying to get my trade bow decided on and just wanted to make sure slapping skins on it wouldn't get it caught in limbo at customs. Thanks for the help.

I hope not ...It wouldn't be cool to have customs commandeer someone's rig just because it is skinned... I looked into it a little last year and there were some deals about it being tanned and or sealed being okay but that was my interpretation and would not use it as fact as I have not tried it... let me know what you find out

Kip, you can go to USPSdotcom ( ;D ) and find out some but you may have to go to the website of the postal service of the country you are sending to to find out for sure.

I recall admiring a beautiful snake skin bow that master bowyer John Strunk built. He said he had built it for a customer in a European country but found out that the country prohibited the import of snakeskins so he could not ship it. Unfortunately I do not recall which country it was.

Not all snakeskins are banned for import only the species that are cites listed, but that said customs arent too well educated so it could be a nightmare to get it released it they take it.
So the safe bet would be fake skins.....and as said a takedown cuts the cost a lot.

Thanks all, I'll try doing some specific looking in shipping sites.  Wonder if after the bow is all finished I could "back" it with masking tape to "protect" the skins?  Think they'd pull the tape to look under?
