Here is my first attempt at crab apple, I just let the bumps and thorns dictate the shape. I started with 2" of reflex and ended up at 1.5" behind the handle. I love the way it shoots and will surely try again. 66" 50# at 28".(http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q556/longbow60/crabapple/dscn0361_zpsdd17d65b.jpg)

Smell that? Thats 2 stroke exhaust from my chainsaw! I m covered in crab apple. Great looking bow. Did you temper it?
-
I did not temper, but you bet I will for the next one. The development I live in is called crab apple hill, so I also have a good supply. The pictures do not show the character of this bow well at all, the back looks like a mountain range.(http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q556/longbow60/dscn0367_zpsd19aa5c8.jpg)

Photo bucket is giving me fits. Am I the only one? Is there another way to post pictures?

SWEET!!!!!!!
-
Save them to your "Pictures". Then right click and open with "Paint". Click on image resize/skew. Chose the size at 40 x 40 and click save. It will be nice to look at, but only 70-80 kb's.
-
Thanks Pearl Drums, I will try that.
-
I've also got some crabapple trees that I've been eyeing up. Will do for certain, now! Thanks for the inspiration. Beautiful bow.
-
I forgot to mention. That 40 x 40 size is good when saving originals that are 1-2 mb in size.
-
Awesome bob...I'm sure it looks better in person....I always like not tempering a wood not used much or at all the first time I try it just to see what it does on its own.....looks like a lil tempering wood work well next go around...but it looks like a forgiving shooter. I've been eyeing the crab apples here for a few years but never have cut one yet...they're pretty gnarly critters. Might have to cut the ones on my property now...lol. I remember you asking me about the one I had my Molly curve sitting in ;)
-
cool bow brother.you did good.
-
Nice !
Good job !!

Nice Character bow. Crab apple, huh ??? I'll have to see if we have any of that around here now.
-
rps3,
That is absolutely beautiful...I love the character
-
I got a crab apple in my yard just asking to get cut. I know what I will do. Sweet bow.
-
Wo that is really cool!
-
That bow has personality! Nice job!!
-
I've got a crab apple I was planning on cutting. Looks like I'll have more to do with the wood than just smoke some meat :)

Neato bow!! Love it
-
What a beautiful bow!!! Thats exactly my style of bow, Love it!
-
Friggen sweet! Apple is great wood, huh? I love the brown color you get when ya just peel the bark off and then it dries. I love the design you used, AWESOME bow!!
-
Dang! That is pretty wood. You made a fine bow out of it. Seems that I remember cutting a crabapple down a few years ago and it being some of the hardest wood I ever put a chainsaw to.... or maybe my saw was just dull. How was it to work?
-
Thank you all for your thoughts, but Johnny appleseed might have a bone to pick with me now if you all start using crabapple :) Many of the thorns popped out while making the bow so it has about 7 hole through it also. As far as hardness goes, I cut this tree with a hatchet, but it took to a draw knife, rasp and scraper with ease. I look forward to seeing some more crabapple bows, maybe someone with more tempering experience will give it a go.
-
That is a sweet looking bow. Very nice work. I am eyeing the 4 crabapples we have in the yard. Wife says no!
-
very cool, success w/what nature gave you, awesome bow

Yes very sweet bow Bob. Nice job. Once again we are inspired to expand our choices of wood.
Mitch...don't you know its better to be forgiven for such things than it is to be told no.....lol
