Title: Bow Challenge with my 12 yr old son
Post by: Gsulfridge on January 29, 2013, 07:50:51 pm: My son is catching the bow building bug and is itching for one of my staves. I made a deal with him. Since all my staves are in various stages of seasoning, I would challenge him to build a bow unassisted out of the only wood I had dry, ERC. If he could successfully build a shooter without help, I'd give him his pick of my Osage staves. Tall order right? Wrong! Not only did he build it, but he built it in three days after school. I think I should have been more specific. . . . bye, bye Osage stave :'(

It launches Q-tip arrows completely across the room. It did take about 1/4" of set, so he still has some learning to do, but then again, so do I!

He would have gotten his stave anyway, but that little cedar bow was really something. I'll turn him loose on some better wood as soon as it dries. He is always ready to go with me to go cut and split and carry out bow wood as well as pack out armloads of cane. Good kid.

. . . suppose I did but man, it was a fun deal. Sad to say, his little brother broke the bow last nite trying to string it. He has already started on another cedar mini.

Post by: JW_Halverson on January 31, 2013, 06:01:23 pm: You could add a last minute codicil or requirement to the deal. He has to build a miniature bow from the same stave as well as the full sized bow! He's crafty enough that he may very welll be thinking of it already.

He's welcome at my turkey camp any spring, or muzzleloader deer camp in the winter, and any Rendezvous I may find myself at. I like his bent sense of humor!
