Bubby and I where talking the other day about bow builds and such. He told me if I built a horse bow he would send me the hair tassle for the top. Challenge accepted. I didnt spend much more than 5 minutes getting and idea of what a horse bow is. So if my depiction isnt to scale, or my layout isnt authentic, my apologies. Im basically going to build a bow that can be easily shot while riding a horse. The stave was a sliver of the King I had laying around. Its 47.5" long and 1 1/4" wide, very solid. I reflexed it to 3.5" and slightly turned the tips for now. I shredded some back sinew, with more to come. My plan is 45-46" ntn and somewhere in the 40# @ 24-25" range. Here is what I got done so far this morning.
-
I'll be watching with interest PD. Love these little Indian bows.
-
good start pearlie I think this is gonna be a fun build
-
Nice lookin job so far Pearl. Be sure and post a lot of pics of the tillering process. That bow has the same reflex as a bamboo backed osage I am working on. Never tillered one with reflex before, so I am interested to see how she comes along.
-
that bow is gonna be cool.can't wait to see it complete.
-
Look'n gooood. Can't wait to see the progress and finished bow!
-
Whoa Pearly :o That is going to be one sweet little bow.
-
Clintster maybe you and Steve could full draw that bugger? With a bendy you lose all of 1" of draw due the handle depth. If it holds up I will bring it to the Classic for you to try out. Im adding 3 full layers of sinew, so the break shouldnt be violent!
-
So who's bringing the horse? Id sure like to see Clint or Steve at full gallop trying to shoot it  u getting her glued down this weekend.....
-
How about a plastic barrel and 4 ropes? We can yank on the ropes while they try to shoot? Doubt I will get the sinew down until Monday. The shop is closed for today and I have my new TWIN nieces baptism tomorrow. So cool!
-
It will be FD for me. Bring it and you can laugh at my crappy shooting. I'll bring my 49.5" sinewed osage bow.
And I don't ride horses so you can get that idea out of your head right now. Maybe I could sit on a cooler in the back of Pappy's utility vehicle and take some full speed drive by shots ;D
-
I'd like to see Clint or Steve even try to mount a horse:)
Looking nice, Pearly.
-
I'll get Steve up on my shoulders and run past the target ;D
-
I'll get Steve up on my shoulders and run past the target ;D
And ill hold the target :o ...I should be fine cus I know he won't be able to hit the broadside of a barn
-
Looks good.

maybe you can find a pony
-
Looks like a good start to me,and a good profile.
-
Be careful with them shorties, Drums. You're gonna git bit by them! Once you start making them, its tough to stop.
My name is Matt, and I'm a short bow addict.... ;D  ;)
-
I can't wait to see the finished product! Josh
-
That's gonna be a cool little bow Pearlie. Like Matt said they are as addictive. I've built a few and have a few more bouncing around in my brain.
I prefer back sinew for backing bows. For me it makes a lot neater application.
-
I tillered the little bugger out to 18" yesterday and got two courses of sinew down. Its reverse braced about 4". Im going to wait two weeks and add one more layer. Then wait two more weeks and add rawhide. The string angle still looked great at 18".
-
Thanks, PD. I'm going to enjoy this. Jawge
-
Looking good so far. Can't wait to see it finished.
-
yes looks good, I'm watching with interest

The cool part of all this is my buddy has a great horse that will let me do whatever I want on his back. So If Im a little tipsy or leaning he wont give me any problems at all. He is a good boy! Cant wait to fire some arrows off his back this spring.
-
Whoa,i got back a little late on this one.lots of short joke flying around.i will shoot that bow off the top of what ever you choose.even clints shoulders, running horse, atv, beer cooler, barrel with ropes.but if i hit the target that Blackhawk is holding,i get to keep the bow.sound like a deal? >:D

Hey Matt, I'm a short bow addict also. Hey wait a minute, were you talking about the bows being short or......... ;D
-
After 8 days of curing the string I used to reverse brace the bow 4" has went slack. Thats always nice to see when adding sinew.
-
I'm thinking with the induced reflex and the sinew pulling it even further as it cures, that one is gonna have some serious reflex.
You guys crack me up with your poking and prodding one another. Danny
-
Bring him out here to South Dakota and I can make arrangements to get him in range of some buffalo. If he's willing to fork a horse he may be the first person to kill a buff with a bow off horseback since Howard Hill filmed it back in the day!
-
Thank you for posting this one PD...
I look forward seeing your progression.

J dub, I wish to correct you on this point and looking forward to you witty rebuke. But, Gary Morris, the county singer (wind beneath my wings et al) had a hunting show in the early 90's. His sidekick I believe was Brad or Brian Smith. Smith made self bows that Gary often hunted with on the show. On one episode Gary was invited to Reservation I believe in SD to hunt buffalo. Brad/Brian made an osage bow for him for this hunt. Gary took a buffalo while on horseback.
I remember this episode because I said to myself, "One day I'll make an osage bow to hunt with." Well, 15 years later I began this journey.

Looking great Chris, Since Seabass and I are both fairy short with shorty draw lengths I say we get to flip for who gets to shoot. And since we have several who could easily be mistaken for the horses @$$ I vote for Roy as the South end and JW has the north end of the horse. Since Osage Outlaw is the animal with insane strength to split 114 Osage staves in a short time he gets to be the buffalo. >:D
-
Great plan Keenan, you got Roy's job right! Dont be suprised if this one doesnt make the trip back from TN with me.

Lol........"classic" stuff right there....lmao
-
Yes "Classic" for sure and very PA to boot !
-
Just got done adding the final layer of sinew and hide glue. It was resting at 4" reflex before I added this last layer. Im going to let it set up for a day, then reverse brace it 6", or so. After that Im leaving it alone for a few weeks..............then its time to fling some arrows! My plan is to push this bow hard to get a 26" draw.
-
Chick Hawkie, don't make me come out there.:)
-
can't wait to see this one finished
-
Funny stuff and sweet bow.

Funny stuff and sweet bow.
Might make a flight east in May worth it! Cant you just see Clint on all fours with a buff hide draped over him? Keenan has that sweet buckskin outfit already.....and Roy? Well he is always in costume. This all coming togther! Even better than my bow project!

Very funny Keenan. When my Dad was growing up he was a little husky also. His nickname was Buff, short for buffalo. We still call him that every now and then.
-
Here she is all sinewed. I plan to add rawhide in a week. I will use hide glue for that as well.
-
Looks like she's already to ship off to me,and you can put that 20 dollar bill in with it too ;)
-
Man you guys make bow building easy... Like it so far Chris!
-
I've never seen twenty dollars worth of reflex before :o
-
Thats looking really good man. Can't wait to see it finished.
-
lookin' good pearlie, that's more reflex than I got, or wanted on mine, Bub
-
Coooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool!
-
did you add extra length to the bow when you reversed strung it for the sinew?i am going to start one soon.i saw somewhere they added four extra inches to be cut off later.is this the method you used?looking great btw.
-
Nope. Its going to stay at its current length Steve.
-
Chris,
Beginners question here- What is the reason for both sinew and rawhide backing?
It's looking good!
-Dan
-
Dan i skin or rawhide all sinewed bows to protect the glue. In this case i want to paint the back and will need a "canvas" to do so.
-
short bows always intrigue me, someday i'll build one, until then i'll be watching.
-
I chose to fore go the rawhide. Im going to skin this bow rather. Its 46" ntn and tillered out to 26". But it feels good at 25", which is a tad over 40#. Its a rippin little turd. It never make a sound the whole time I tillered it. No glue cracking and no frets. Its a sound little bow and really does shoot hard enough to kill a deer at 25". I left the tips plain and just shaped them and narrowed them some. I will post pics when I get the finish work all done.
-
looking good. where are the pictures of you shooting it though?? I need to try one of these myself sometime soon.
-
Randy I need to get her finished off now. I will put up some finish pics in a week or so. Gotta corral some skins for it and attach my horse hair tassle.
-
haven't had to say this before but, pearlie hurry up >:D, really want to see this baby done, bub
-
Want to see this one finished up Pearly, gonna be a nice one and likely a screamer to boot.
Gregh
-
Can't wait to see the end product + the money shot PD - lookin' really good ! Bob
-
Its my first super shorty Bob. Im excited to try another one. Matt and a few others warned me about making shorties......guess what? He was right again!
-
THat baby is looking sweeeeet!
-
Looks real nice Pearly.
-
