Its crazy out there. I went to Academy sports the other day to buy a scope for my .22 rifle and they were completely sold out. They have almost an entire aisle with nothing but scopes but the whole thing was empty. Only scopes they had in stock were the ones behind the counter and I wasnt about to spend 250 bucks on a leupold for my squirrel hunting gun. I asked the guy behind the counter when they would get more scopes in and he said they were getting 2 trucks a week of guns, ammo and accesories and they still cant keep up with demand.

My brother in law went to a gun show Saturday in Nashville, got there early and the line was around the building, fire marshal was there and the place was so full they would only let someone in when someone left, took 4 hours to get in. He said it sure wasn't worth the wait, they had nothing left when he got in. :) Only going to get worse at least for a while. It's kind of like the weather man calling for snow, the supermarkets sell out of bread and milk,we always accuse the weather man of being on the big stores pay roll, they call them when they get a lot of close dated stuff.  ;D ;D

I was looking for some CCI Mini Mags HP to Squirrel hunt with.
No body had any.  For weeks on end.
Finally a friend of mine at work found 4-100 count boxes at a pawn shop.
He bought all 4 boxes.  I bought one from him.  That should keep me Squirrel ammo until
Mall-Smart gets some more on the shelves.  When they do I hope to buy several boxes of them.

You just might be right Pappy.

A cousin-in-law of mine has about 250,000 rounds of 22 ammo.
He also has about twice that in other types of ammo. And lots of guns.

It would be nice if 22 ammo could be reloaded......

It's that way everywhere David. About the only ammo you'll find is a little oddball stuff and even that's getting harder to find.  I'm like Pappy. Some people invest in gold and silver, I'm putting my money on brass and lead!
I need some IMR4895 rifle powder but can't get any :(

Think you gotter bad. :o We get our stuff from the states. Powder primers are running scarce. A competion shooter gave up the game 6months ago got a couple thousand sp primers and 23lbs of powder for less than half price. For once I made a good move. 223 supplies are running real thin. It'll get better summer I hope.

I was at my local Sportsman's Warehouse at 10 minutes before opening time this last MONDAY morning
and had to drive around the parking lot because it was full. Finally got in and it was a mad house with
crazy acting folks rushing all over the guns and mostly empty ammo racks. Some were rednecks like me
but there were suit guys in there too.

I remember it being wild at certain times in the past but dear lord folks have gone crazy. I was there to buy
a hunting handgun but just said the hell with it and left.

I started this thread to see if it was this bad all over. Guess it is. Glad I keep a goodly stock of ammo but
sure wanted that Super Blackhawk.

And for all the frenzy and panic, I can't see any reason whatsoever to buy an AR-15 platform in any caliber, or any conformation.  I personally think it is a crappy, cheap, stamped metal spray-n-pray gun for people unwilling to learn marksmanship.  Same for the AK's and all those military style guns.  I just can't see why someone wants them?

But then, I have several one of a kind, custom built flintlocks.  And not one of them hasn't provided me with multiple meals.  One has been successfully presented as an arguement as to why I should get to live another day.  And yes, I also own a walnut stocked Remington 700 in .243, and a Taurus 1911/45, among other modern weapons, so I am not totally lost in the past.

And there are going to be a bunch of posts whipping up support for the AR platform, maybe even the other de-commissioned military arms.  And respectfully, I will decline to read any of it.  You'd do better trying to convince me to go down and get fitted for a new Matthews compound.  And that sure as heck ain't happening either.  My philosphy just won't allow me to understand the attraction.
Title: Re: Ammo
Post by: Josh B on January 17, 2013, 01:04:26 am
Well JW, you have a right to your opinion. No matter how ill informed it is.  Just as I have a right to own my AR's, AK's, FAL's and various other rifles that I own.  Regardless of how much that right is resented.  So, I'll make a deal with you.  Don't piss on my parade and I'll try not to piss on yours.  Josh
Title: Re: Ammo
Post by: johnston on January 17, 2013, 03:39:47 am
I have to admit it. I ain't one of the "big tent" kinda guys. Just because it's a form of hunting or shooting  doesn't mean
I am a fan and in fact some of it I want no part of. Hunting in fences ( except to run dogs..no killing) or 800 yard rifle
shots with "long range systems" or wheelies with bow mounted range finders etc, etc.
BUT...
Americans have a history of adopting our military arms for hunting. Witness the .30 caliber military round of 1906,
better known as the .30-06. And when current handguns of the time proved insufficient for war Mr. Browning gave us the
almighty 1911 in .45 acp. Hell boys, when I started trying to find bows of my native southeast to copy I discovered that as
quick as they could the natives adopted firearms.

Everyone has an opinion and likewise everyone has a preference. I have no interest in an AR platform nor in a muzzle loader.
But having shot a few 3-gun matches and hunted on a couple black powder only dove fields I can appreciate the skill and understand
the required dedication to both.

My interests fall somewhere in the 1920's firearm wise. And I fully believe the last man standing will be using a pump shotgun and a single
action revolver.

We can hunt with wood bows because we do not need the meat to survive. No matter the skill in building or skill in shooting a $100 single
shot 12 gauge would provide now as it did back when it HAD to.

I started this thread because of the , well, panic I have seen at sporting goods stores in the last couple of weeks. But people like us, folks that
hunt with primitive equipment of our own making or modern stuff we are comfortable with.... we will survive in style as we always have.

I don't see the attraction in golf clubs/bowling balls or tennis rackets either but it bothers me not at all to those that do. :) I have an Ar and believe me it ant spray and pray. ;) :)  I was afraid this might get out of hand and so far it hasn't,lets please keep it that way.Thanks.

I like hunting with my AR, that's why I put a Nikon scope on it. It's taken out a few hogs. And I like hunting with my Flinter's, too. But if the price keeps going up on the AR's I might just jump on the panic wagon and triple my money.
Title: Re: Ammo
Post by: Christian Soldier on January 17, 2013, 10:45:42 am
Americans are buying everything that the government might be banning. ARs have doubled even tripled in price.

30rd P-mags have at least trippled in price if not more. What used to be a $15 mag is now running for over $100 on Ebay.
Nobody is buying this stuff with the intention of giving it back when the government asks.

My friend's cousin traded his car for an AR.

I saw a sign at walmart yesterday that said a customer could only buy one box of ammo per 24 hour period.

More than a quater million members joined the NRA in the past month alone.

If the gun owners win, It'll still be awhile until everything is back to normal.
The second ammendment isn't about hunting, its about the common mans defence from evil men and from his own government becoming tyrannical. It means freedom. If the Second Ammendment falls, there's no telling what else our government can do.

Now is the time to stand up and say 'Enough', and millions of law abiding american citizens are doing just that. Saturday is actually a rally day across the country.

New videos on youtube everyday about defending the 2nd. Check out the MrColoinNoir Channel.

Sorry if this was a bit forward, I'm just keeping it real. That's what this is about.

Once a man has put a few hundred thousand rounds of ammo thru a particular weapon system, he kinda get's a feel for it.  I've been to a few wars and I've humped a ruck sack along with an M16/M4 in deserts, mountians, from Korea to Iraq.  I've even  jumped from a few planes with a black rifle.  In my opinion it's as good as it get's for cleaning up the trash.  If I was forced to put my life on the line, and I had a choice on a weapon system it would be with a black rifle.  They sure aren't perfect, but they will defiantly get the job done.  You just have to know how to drive one.

Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately, I stocked up on reloading supplies and .22 amo many years ago, I have enough to last me a couple of lifetimes.  Now as I am getting older it seems to be becoming more of an encumbrance than a comfort.  If I shot black powder I would have stocked up on saltpetre and sulphur  :)

Jon, I like your style.   ;)

I heard the black guns have gone up in price a bit, lately.  Nice that I got a few before the recent rush.

I just like guns.  All guns.  I like bows; all bows (except compounds).  I like women; all women.  I also like Reese's Peanut Butter Cups - Eggs, cups, mini's, 2-packs, 4-packs and bunny shaped.  Enjoying all or any of them doesn't make me a psychopath.

As Mary Poppins said, "These are a few of my favorite things!"  I'm happy to be American, for my current freedom to be me.  Hoping that doesn't change...

The thing is, the guy at Sandy Hook, did not use the bush master rifle.  He left it in his car and used multiple hand guns, but the press as ever, never lets the facts get in the way of a good story.  Artistic license so to speak. ::)
The communist national news, (cnn) finally admitted that the guy did not use an "assault rifle" but multiple hand guns.  Ahhh. sculpted news. ;)  All the news, that they want us to hear, and in the manner, and style they want us to hear, and believe.  Yeah, better get ammo, where ever, and whenever you can.  Wally World has knelt down at barry's feet, and has declared it will not order any more ammo, till it see how the law changes.

The russians say we are a bunch of out of control gun nuts.Russia's Murder rate is triple ours. They severely restrict private ownership of guns. (Wonder why that isn't in the news) I think that Clinton's gun ban showed everyone what the government is thinking these days and suspect that public safety isn't the main reason for gun control. I don't have any black rifles, but I have a real nice brown one(Ruger Mini-14) that shoots straight and is good for coyotes for out there a ways.I have about a hundred hunting rounds for it and went to buy some more the other day at a store that had a couple of pallets of it just before Christmas...nope !... Don't know when there will be more......Guys are buying anything they can get as an investment..Well...Better get to building some arrows.  '  Frank

Apparently the guns and ammo scare has carried even carried into the world of flintlocks.  I took my son to a local outdoors store just to get out of the house last night and walk around.  I figured I'd pick up a few of cans of blackpowder when I was there, too.  Ha!  Turns out the price jumped from $18/lb to $30/lb in the last month.  Luckily, I'm not in short supply "yet", so I decided to pass until the scare dies down.

Handguns and semi-auto rifles were sure flying off the shelves, and all the clerks were busy on the phones trying to get through to run the instant background checks.  It seemed like they were all on hold the whole time I was there.

I used to shoot competitively with my grandfather growing up (.22 silhouette, NRA/DCM service rifle matches with M-1 Garands and AR-15's), but never bought my own once I grew up and stopped shooting matches.  I'm not into modern firearms much, but I sure would like a Garand, though.  I loved getting in a steady groove with that old "battle rifle".  Unfortunately, it just never quite made it high enough up on my priority list.  I may need to rethink that.  They're getting harder to find and more expensive all the time.  These talks of bans definitely don't help.

Bet Obama and Biden have a portfolio that includes large recent stock buys in ammo companies. O:) This crap happens every time a democrat either gets in (remember the surge in sells when obama got elected?) or tries to tighten laws on weapons. I feel that the more you buy and spend (especially AT INCREASED prices) will show the manufacturers what people are willing to spend.....I think people are screwing themselves in the long run........it is EASY to raise prices in a panic.....not so easy for those prices to come down when this is all over. I find it laughable that people think "if" they came to your door to collect your guns 99.9% of the people would give them up (if they knew for a fact you had them) there are very few people that would have the balls to actually show them the barrel end. my .02

This thread is about "Ammo" or the lack of it. Lets keep it factual and on track(as long as it can be discussed on PA) and not bring any conspiracy theories into it.

Went to the Gun Show today. It wasn't very crowded but everybody said Saturday it was full of all kinds of people buying up everything. There were plenty of 5.56 30 round magazines for $45, the ammo had jumped to $70 for a hundred. 22 ammo was very scarce as was any Ruger 25 and 50 round magazines for the 10/22. Only one 50 rnd in the whole place and my buddy bought it. I sold a military rifle and ammo and would have sole my A-4 if someone would have paid the ridiculous price I was asking ;D

I went Saturday to a tiny gun shop in my little town.  The only ammo that I really needed was some .17 cals for my squirrel, woodchuck and 'coon getter.  They had only one pack left (which I bought at 14.99)  It was half that a year ago.  I guy came into the store the day before and bought a case of it.  The store owner said that he tried to order more and the manufacturers didn't have any left to sell him.

I got the same shock yesterday when I tried to find 22 ammo to squirrel hunt with. None at Walmart, Gander mountain or any of the on line places like Cabella's, Bass Pro or Midway.

I did find some CCI green tag sub sonic target loads at a small town gun shop. No one wanted them, they were pricey but not marked up. Turned out I was looking for target loads as my Rem 541S loves them. My rifle will put three in about a 3/8" group at 50 yds, if I do my part the squirrels don't stand a chance.

Sure got my questions answered when I started this topic. See, sometimes in the South things are
different than in other parts of the country. Didn't say better, just different. In this current mess
though it seems to be the same all over. Ain't good.

I'm signed up for a little handgun course at a local range and while there the Rangemaster said
he thought buckshot would triple in price within 2 months. Around here shotgun ammo has been
available and not too bad price-wise so to check it out I did a little phone survey of a few folks I
thought would have some insight....might ought to stock up fellers.

And that was before that guy said to get a shotgun.

I'm glad I stock up years ago. This prices are crazy. How many times since the mid 90's have they ran a scare and raised tax and prices on ammo and guns. uncle told me years ago, boy put your extra $ in  guns. I'm like a few, I stocked up on ammo and air tight storage years ago. With these prices I could get 10 to 1 or better.
