This will be more of a simple follow along more than a descriptive build along, but if anyone has questions please feel free to ask and I will try to answer them the best I can. I grabbed this outta the shed ,don't know why cus its only 9 months off the stump and I have plenty of good ole seasoned hedge to use...ok youll see why it struck a fancy with me. Its from a 4-5" diameter tree, and it was split in half a few days after I cut it.
Heres what it looked like with the bark on from the front....not so bad ;)
It has decent enough rings...not big,but 1/16" latewood with thin earlywood
(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/2013-01-09_16-30-10_457.jpg)
And heres what it looked like from the side >:D
(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/2013-01-09_16-28-50_986.jpg)
So I chased a ring on it and laid out the front profile...it was a pain chasing up and over that big deflexed kink as the rings got super duper thin there...prob about 1/64" thin easy as a pass or two with the scraper would remove a ring.
Time to take her to the bandsaw(im a cheater now),and here she is cut out
(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/2013-01-11_19-22-44_676.jpg)
I then drew some facet lines along each side to cut a rough side profile out and get rid of all that meat....back to the saw she went, and now all rough cut out to shape and length
(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/2013-01-11_19-24-26_529.jpg)
I made sure to shellac the back of the bow,if you don't theres about a 98% possibility of it checking on you if you took the same from an outdoor environment to an indoors one,no matter how long its been cut. I might reduce it down to floor tiller this weekend to dry out a lil quicker, and I did all this in a couple hours last night for some Friday night relief ;D
-
I can hear the Carol King blaring from that radio from up here.
-
How long is it right now?
-
pearly shes just over 62" long ...its as long as I could get because from the apex of the kink to that shorter end was only 31"...I thought about going assymetrical to get more lenght, but with this design that's plenty of length for osage to get it too a 27" draw easy. the inner limbs will be really low stressed as you know how R/D designs work and function. I actually had some country rocking from the radio last night ;)
-
Can you make a bow out of the other half?
-
Can you make a bow out of the other half?
yes...the other side and split will make a bow too....but it has not spoken my name
-
Its screaming my name. Ill take it, after its done of course. Then I will owe you another one.
-
Now that's gonna be fun to watch! Do us proud, man!!
Scott
-
Whenever I fell a Bodark tree, and find that the rings look like those rings, my body does the hoochie koochie and I can't stop myself. :)
-
Oh my 'hawk! Can't wait to see this one.
-
This is why I bring ol' Chickenhawk a twisty, knotty, wreck of a stave to the classic. He sees the bow hidden inside and tears into it like a crazed beaver. :o It's fun to watch in person. Good luck with this one. Should be an interesting side profile when its done.
-
"Crazed Beaver",......I think I see a nickname in there Clint?
-
It might have fit him better before he shaved off his mountain man beard
-
The beard will reappear, trust me.
-
Kinky is as kinky does! ;D ...and Chris, turn up the Carol King, will you. ;)
-
Sweet stave Blackhawk. I will be watching and listening....I feel the Earth move under my feet...
-
lol  y'all know me so well, and sounds like your more interested in poking my ribs than this stave
well...spent a lil time on her this morn and got her just starting to floor tiller and bend a few inches...don't need any pics of that..this is one of those pieces of wood that just loves to tear out all over the place no matter how well I run a tool...oh well...rasp away....
I then decided to cut around the knot in the handle following the grain around it...and boy oh boy is it gonna look sweet when done :D
(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/2013-01-12_11-20-23_578.jpg)
there was more meat to that side anyways...its still has a concavity in the belly of the handle that I might have to fill a little with glue n dust...we'll see when we get there tho...might have to leave a naked handle too to show off the grain of that knot ;)
if you go back and look at the side view profile after I cut it out you can see two knots exactly the same distance from the handle 6" away from the fades right before the limbs reflex back up...well they are punky inside and must be removed....oh darn ;)
that's one of my small pointy grinded screwdrivers that help me dig out punky wood...as you can see in this case ill take it and a hammer and drive it thru
(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/2013-01-12_11-29-54_170.jpg)
sorry for the upside down pic..someone mustve spiked me coffee this morn ....and after digging the rest out we now have two small holes in the stave :D
(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/2013-01-12_11-36-27_823.jpg)
so I weighed the stave after all this and recorded it and its still a whopping 38 ounces....whew...got me some dense hedge...no wonder it looked thin for how far it was bending....sweet :) I do realize theres a small amount of moisture that needs to be lost yet,but that s some nice wood....so ill let her sit for a lil bit before getting serious with her
-
watching with interest ....
looks good!
Simon
-
Lookin' good Hawky. Lets see her bending
-
Lookin forward to seeing your progress on this one BH. Looks like you need to take that hammer out and dirty it up a little bit..
-
that is a cool stave.i can't wait to see it finished.
-
Carol King? I'm hearing things like "Lola" by the Kinks!
That's a wicked stave, if only it had 180 degrees of twist and some nasty checks....it'd be gstoneberg special!
-
Good things come to those who wait Clint...she is gonna need to sit indoors and lose those last few percentage points in MC.
Yeah okie..new hammer..needs some dings n dirt on her
Hope she makes it Steve..build alongs n such are always a gamble..your either a hero or a zero..lol
Jw...ole George can keep his wood..I don't want it ;)
-
I'm watching too Blackhawk, gotta see what becomes of that character osage. Looked kinda like a kitchen sink drain trap before you took the bark of and cut out the profile. Cool build!
Greg
-
Looking forward to this.
Most of my osage look like that.
Make me scratch my head when I look at it. ;D
-
oooh I'll pop some corn....
-
Looking good Chris, I'm seeing a Korpowitz? low stack design in there. And at what point are you going to sweep up? :D
-
Oh my! That is gonna be SWEET!!!!!
-
That handle area looks to have some awesome potential. I think you are right that you are going to have to leave that one naked.
-
Just like I like ( almost ) everything. Naked and kinky.... please tell me your gonna oil it up! I love bow porn.......
-
Looks interesting, I am following along.
-
Looking cool, Molly. ;D
-
Cody I can't keep up with my mess.....the chips fall faster than I can pick em up ;)
This one might be a good candidate for skins...maybe..depends on how it shoots..if it shoots...hmmm...kinky naked wood with skins on it all oiled up...oh my :o
Hahaha roybert....no Molly in this one...surprised?
-
Hey Molly Chicken Hawkie, I'm off this Monday and Tuesday and next weekend:) Ya know where I live..............
-
I might be able to do next weekend roy...ill let ya know....hows tulip boys coming along?
-
Tulip Boys bow is looking sweet. Have her to 16 inches on the tree with a 6 inch brace height. Needs some weight reduction though. About 60 pounds right now, I plan on taking it down to 40 so he can handle it:)
-
Hey Chris! I'm with PatB. Turn up the Carol King. I can't hear it! Great challenge piece. Looks like fun.
-
40 might still be toooo much for him Roy...id drop it down to 25 ;)
You got it matt ;)
I weighed the stave today and its only lost a tenth of an ounce, which isn't much, and I'm thinking its drier than what I first thought and should be ready for some serious bending n heat correcting by next weekend for sure. And in the meantime I made and finished off another bow today, and ill start oiling it up later today.
-
"Crazed Beaver",......I think I see a nickname in there Clint?
Made me giggle a bit. I don't think calling someone a "Crazy Beaver" has the same conotations down there as it does in Canada. ;)
-
Got a name for your whoopteedooed bow there yet?
-
Got a name for your whoopteedooed bow there yet?
I don't know yet Ed...I've been waiting for someone to come along and say something about it that rings a bell......."kinky Kat"?....."busy beaver"?...sometimes I name a bow and sometimes I don't. Any better ideas?...cus those are striking me either.
-
Not sure narley/nasty are the right words for that, one thing for sure the rings are prefect, just the way I like them, good luck on a very challenging stave.Chuck and
I split up a log about like that Saturday evening, everyone else had left if for junk, it may be,just have to see.
Pappy
-
Looks like a "speed bump" to me.
Scott
-
There ya go man. Thanks Stringman.Gotta see how much of that speed bump your gonna remove.Thought you had a hot box?You could make a big production out of it and steam it like Gary davis does and tame her that way.Might help to dry it out quicker too.
-
Hmmm? Speed bump..lol....its even yellow
Ed Ill use dry heat to the limbs....there's no way in heck I'm gonna try and flatten out that kink..ill use it to my advantage...I haven't come up with a game plan of attack yet...but ill come up with it when I get there...I like to fly by the seat of my pants ;)
Any other good ideas for names?
-
Any other good ideas for names?
Kinky King?
Mr. Warple?
Kinkanator?
Cautious Curves?
OneBow
-
Ooooo! Caution curves... Or maybe just the highway symbol?!?
Scott
-
Earth Mover
-
How about Carole King, or just Carole
-
I think Stringmans "Speedbump" hit the spot,a perfect name!
-
wiggle jiggle
-
^ its sexy and it knows it..... wiggle jiggle yeah!
-
I think you would be missing a golden opportunity here if you pass up the chance to honor the most sexy Navy fighter WWII produced. What you have there sir is the perfect profile of the wing of an F4U Corsair. Do it up with a Navy paint job, paint missiles and everything. You can even paint your arrows up like missiles. Please oh please Mr Blackhawk..... do it.
-
yeah with those funky wings sleek, that's cool
-
How about Carole King, or just Carole
How about Carol Kink?

buch of porn addicts, this is what happens when you look at bows online to much
-
So my wife sits at the computer and sees one of the tabs I have open says " A Big Kinky ". Thats all she saw. She called me soo dang mad. Thanks buddy, way to get a guy in trouble for no reason....
-
Not my fault ya can't resist the porn sleek >:D....ok..maybe I'm an enabler ;)
Nuttin has really struck a chord with me yet...so who knows ??? Heck it ain't even bending yet. It has lost three tenths of an ounce since sat morn...I'm guessing any moisture left in it is coming from the thick handle section...the limbs should be ok enough to floor tiller n heat shape this weekend. In the meantime ill give ya guys some finished bow porn maybe this eve or tomorrow while we wait on this one. ;)
-
Jolly Molly...
LMFAO :)
-
Maybe you ought to name it the wild thing.
I see how this bow building works now.Putting sinewed and heat treated bows on the waiting list then roughing out a couple more etc.Letting obsession run wild.
-
I think I'd call it "Sneaky Snake"... :)
-
well....its been a couple weeks since I last touched this one...I don't want my little big buddy passing me up on his r/d stave ;)
the stave lost 1.2 ounces in two weeks, and needed some more floor tillering to reduce some more weight to be heat corrected and shaped
this first picture is the bottom limb first since its tips were further behind than the tops....I just reflexed mid limbs on
(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/2013-01-26_12-19-06_820.jpg)
next I did the same thing to the top limb
(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/2013-01-26_14-11-38_795.jpg)
now this only reflexed from mid limbs on in both limbs, and it put my tips a half inch behind the handle still(not enough for me)...I didn't want to have to put much if any heat to where those knot holes are...and my string tracking was looking like it was on the wrong side of the handle....so I went for one more heating session to put some reflex out of the fade area and to move my string tracking over....so over the two by four it went with some creative ingenuity(isn't that how it always goes)
next picture shows it over the two by four...it looks like I have uneven reflex, but I had to overcompensate a little because the right limb had more reflex than the left
(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/2013-01-26_15-17-55_458.jpg)
and heres a shot showing how I moved my string tracking over heating the fades of the handle
(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/2013-01-26_15-20-58_884.jpg)
and heres what she looks like after unclamped 8)
and the string now looks to favor the correct side....and now shes ready to start some serious bending and tip overlays
-
mean looking profile.
-
That is going to be one wicked bow! Hope it turns out for you
-
this one is going to be sweet.i can't wait for the full draw.i bet it will be awesome.
-
Mighty GOODness! Chris, if you pull this off, you're my hero! That stick has curves!
Scott
-
Looking real good Blackhawk, I likey.
See you use the time honored system of on the spot jig rigging from scraps, straps, spit and clamps. ;)
-
Great build!
How's about "The sinister sliver"?
-
this is going to be one sweet bow when you're done
-
Speed Bump is good, mountain curves, bush slope, how about [forest bend] for a name.
-
Oooh, that is sweet,it gonna be a smooth shooter with that deflex grip.
-
Get er done dude...
-
Well, I guess you can make a silk purse out of a sows ear. Looking good, Chris.
-
That baby is sure showing promise! Josh
-
That's great moan. The propfile ypou heated is color. If it was me I wopulkd rpound the last outer thirds a bit to even up the strain on the lkimbs, but I'm usually opverly picky. That things screams recurve to me. I have a bear recurve with that propfile. What a great stave you have there. I'm watching now!
-
That's lookin purty sweet man!
-

DVS, ya hain't been drinken have ya son?:) LOL there is a spell check on here.
-
Blackhawk's Kodiak Magnum.... It amazes me how you see a bow in these screwy pieces of wood! I can't wait to see how this one turns out.
-
WOW is that going to be sweet...
"HUMPTY"
"HUMPTY THUMPTY"
-
Lookin' good there Mollyhawk. I'm not going anywhere near that much reflex in the limbs.
-
Thanks guys...hope I can pull this one off
DVS...I might reflex/flip the last 8" or so yet,I can't quite put in static recurves tho because it has a group of knots a few inches from one tip,and I don't do sharp bends where there's knots. The tips in one limb have already moved almost 6" with heat, and thats quite a bit of change. Where it reflexes hard back up from the deflex is natural and where those knot holes are,and it would've been dang near impossible to continue to follow that curve. I don t like putting a lot of heat on character spots, and didn't want to try and flatten it out where its so sharp. It is what it is for right now,and ill see how she behaves when I tiller it out whether I wanna do any more heat to her....I generally don't like to heat a same area twice.
Ah come one Clint..go big or go home ;)
-
i cant wait to see this one finished. its looking good
-
Damn...I would give my right arm for a stave like that. I wouldnt be able to tiller her....but that is another matter;-)
Cheers
-
Looks like a DANDY!!!!! to me.
-
after having a splinter pop on a hackberry I was shooting in yesterday I decided to get back to some real wood...this piece of the king has been resting a good bit so lets get her good n floor tillered ready for a string....I do 90%+ of my tillering on the floor before I even string her up to the point of where I feel I have about ten pounds left. remember the unbraced profile has the apex and sharpest point of reflex 6-8" from the fades at those two kinky lil holes....shes looking good to my novice eye ;) ....
now I need to decide what type of tip overlays I want...hmmm...no brainer...im thinking horn >:D
-
Can't wait to see how this one turns out Chris! It's lookin real good :) remember now I like bows in the 40-45# range at 27" so if you happen to miss weight you can just send it right on over >:D lol
-
Ill put that into consideration Will ;) 8)
-
Lookin' good ChickenLegs, I mean Chickenhawk ;D
-
i wanna see this one done.it is gonna be awesome.good work brother.
-
Whoa Balckbird, 'you da master' that is one cool looking piece of art, hopefully she works out without any mishaps.. 8) ::)
-
Gotta see how this one turns out...
-gus
-
I did something I normally don't do cus I thought I might wanna flip or recurve the tips with only having a one inch of reflex start...so I cut some temporary side nocks and started tillering her out...here it is at a 5 1/2" brace
(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/2013-02-28_18-05-27_427.jpg)
I got it pulling out to 22"...no clue on exact poundage yet,but its close to high 50's right now right there.......look I made a triangle...or a diamond including the string..lol.....funky looking huh :D
(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/2013-02-28_18-06-49_867.jpg)
-
It's a working for ya.It should shoot ok I'd think.Never seen anything like it yet but it does have an endearing quality to it though.Sure would raise some eyebrows that's for sure.
-
Sweet! Lovin the way this is lookin. Gotta get my "edumaction" bout these RDs so I can finish the ones I got half finished without messin em up
-
Very cool! 8)
-
iIwould have messed that stave all up. Pretty cool looking bow. All of your bows are awesome and
it'll be fun to watch and see how you finish that one and then what you come up with next. Danny
-
Thanks guys :)
Quick quiz......Does anyone know where I need to scrape?
-
All over, look like it bending good for what it looks like un braced, Maybe a little more top mid limb, did I pass ;) :) :)
Pappy
-

Pappy
Winner winner chicken dinner.... ;D
Looks like you still got a pair of good eyes ;)
-
Man that feels good, never passed much in school. ;) :) By the way that thing is looking good, you done some magic on that gnarly piece of wood, nothing is safe around you. ;) :) :)
Pappy
-
So lets make things even..i got one floating out there unfinished too...lol 😁
Been meaning to do something with this one but it never gets picked up...i think i wanna steam some recurves in it...maybe soon-ish...this ones to cool to let it just sit.
-
About time, just been 2 1/2 years, should be well seasoned. ;) :) Look forward to seeing it in the works. :)
Pappy
-
That thing is knarly
-
That thing is knarly
Maybe ill work on this when ya come over this saturday... 8)
Pappy thats my excuse is it needed to season as it was only 8 months old when i cracked it open ;) thats my story n im sticking to it :P 8)
-
Hey, I remember that bow! At least from when you posted rough out pictures of it years back. Glad to see it is still alive. It is looking awesome. I like the idea of some recurve.
-
Looks good. deflex handles can make good shooters. Chris I am not sure you can build a bow with out some challenge that is beyond most everyone else ability. You ever build a straight forward bow? Keep them coming I like to see what you will do next. Arvin
-
That's a pretty cool looking stick
-
You did a great job. I look at a piece of wood and see a bow, then I just take away everything that isn't the bow,in that all I see was firewood lol Out Standing Work !!!
-
Yea I'm with ghost that split would of been in my firewood pile for sure holy crap great job.
-
Thanks guys....i pulled this out the other night to reaquaint myself with it...might be tuff putting in statics as the upper limb has a nasty banana dogleg from that knot hole to the tip. ..it wood make things tuff trying to align....id have to straighten it out some first.....i might tinker with it this weekend when bruce comes down?
