I've got a wild cherry stave that's been debarked and semi shaped for a little over a month now.
It's about 67in long and 2in wide most of the limb, kind of pyramid-y. Most of the cherry bows I've seen have been backed with something, I assume this is because cherry isn't too great in tension.
The back is clean as can be right now so no rings violated or anything.
I'd really prefer to keep it a self bow for apperance and for less work ;) , can it be done?

Uh...that's easy to believe cus its 78" long and only 43 pounds
If u wanna keep it unbacked then go for a bend in the handle bow and under 50 lbs,and no more than 28" draw Max.

Most of the backed bows you've seen are likely board bows. A clean stave should work hust fine with the right design. Giv'er!

Seen lots of cherry bows on here and it is true that many of them are backed. If you're worried about it's strength in tension then use a trapezoidal cross section with the belly more narrow than the back or maybe just crown the belly of the bow.

Well I only have a 26.5" draw so keeping it under a 28" draw shouldn't be too much of a problem.
I was thinking of having it around 50lbs or just under but I'll trap the belly.
It'll defitely be a 'testing' bow to see how well cherry works. :)

it does not have to be lighter than 50 pounds. I have a 68 inch, unbacked cherry ELB that draws 72 pounds at 27 inches. it is 68 inches NTN, and has only 1 1/2 inches of set. you just have to baby it. also, this one was made from a stave.

I backed most of mine in silk. I did it purely for aesthetics and peace of mind.
Pretty sure it didn't need it though as it survived on the board fine.
