Title: is this Osage?
Post by: mcginnis6010 on January 08, 2013, 01:35:53 pm
OK I haven't come across Osage that often. So when I saw this I thought at first it was BL bc of the bark it was similar but the I looked up and the leaves still attached were not BL leaves. The leaves are more broad leaf looking. Can take more pics of necessary.

Does it have thorns on the small branches?

Doesn't look like Osage to me, a pic of the leaves would help in identifying it.  If I had to take a guess on just this pic I'd guess some sort of ash.

Nope no thorns and what leaves are left are to high to take a pic of.

Looks quite a bit like a Chestnut Oak to me.
Look under it and see it there are any leave on the ground.

Cut one on the tips of the branches off (24" or so)and post a few GOOD photos of it along with the leave you find on the ground
Much could be determined from that.

Cut off a branch. Look for yellow. The osage around here has a more brownish yellow tent to the bark instead of gray

David, that bark does look like chesnut oak. I just cut, split and stacked a whole bunch of it.

I think the ridges in the bark are too heavy for elm.
Take pics of the twigs and buds. That will help ID it.

My guess from the pic would be cottonwood....

Wapiti1997:  That is not a bad guess at all.  It could be Cottonwood.

If it's in a bottomland area it could be cottonwood or possibly sweetgum. It looks like really corky bark, some asian elms have that look too...  One thing is for sure if you can take your hand and break some of the bark, or it feels cushiony, it is not chestnut oak...  :)

I am with Wapiti, it does look like cottonwood.  Any water near by?
