Title: Tiller check- osage recurve
Post by: k-hat on December 22, 2012, 12:35:42 pm
Morning fellas.  I know y'all doin all that Christmas stuff right now but if you'll take a minute to critique i'd appreciate it!

this is an osage recurve (first recurve ;D), for my daughter for Christmas.  I think i've got the tiller right, but that craziness in the upper limb makes it tricky.  It's got a good little kinky knot, reflexes before the knot, deflexes in the knot, then reflexes just after the knot.   Just want to make sure i'm knot fooling myself ::) into thinking the tiller is right:

Thanks a ton!!

I have a hard time seeing it with the ovals on it. Can you post a pic without. It looks pretty good though.

That looks like a damn fine job on a tricky stave. Can't fault it, and trust me I've tried ;)
Maybe you should send it to me for a fuller examination? O:)
She'll love it, enough character to be interesting but without any extra weight to carry.
You better watch out that Santa doesn't borrow it.

You could go round and round on that bow trying to fix every final percentage point of tiller.  Ultimately it leads to madness or a bow with a 4# draw weight.  I say that bow is DONE, be happy with it.  It looks great.

i dont know JW. Have you seen bryce? Looks at a stick that looks great to me "ah look at how that limb is a bit stiff!" or "id say it needs just a bit more here" still ends up with 50 lb draw weight...  ::)

If the soft spot just out past the fade on the right side does not bother you then the rest will be fine !
How much farther are you wanting to draw it the fades are not moving much yet especially on the left ?
Have fun !

Thanks Del.  if only i didn't have to mortgage my right leg for shipping :o (my left is the strong one ::))!

I hear ya JW, that's exactly what i'm tryin NOT to do!!!

Will do guy, it's always fun, aint it? ;)  I'm going for another four inches, and I did take a little more off the fades, but haven't put her on the tree again.  Decided to do some finish work while i waited.  I'll put a few arras through and stick her on the tree again.

Thanks again guys!  ;D

Looks a little flat in the areas I marked, especialy the left limb. But over all it looks nice.

Ok, thanks Roy.  I'll look at those again now that i've done some sanding and recheck'em.

Much appreciated :)

Do you have a tillering gizmo? They work great for reaching perfect tiller.

Tillering gizmos get thrown for a loop when there is any degree of character to the bow.

This is true.

i agree with roy that the left looks stiff.  I tiller on the tree to about 75% of the bows full draw. After that I do not care what it looks like. I only look for hand shock and set. If it feels good and even at full draw it is good. But that is just me.

I left the gizmo out of this one for that very reason.  Would work fine on the left side i suppose, but I also wanted to see how I could do without it.

Paul, I do about the last 4 to 6" or so the way you're saying lately.  Any more this one goes on the tree will be at the draw it is now with some tweaking, then I'll do the rest in hand.

Thanks guys for all the input.  Love PA
