A friend of mine and another friend cut some nice osage last year, and we had one log that was looking very very nice. Well we got to split it out yesterday. We could not believe how straight this thing split out.

We got 5 great staves from the one log, and two of those will give us two bows from each as well

We split another log and got 4 more great staves

Thanks Pappy. I sure hope they do. The one log, split so clean and straight, it bothers me....lol

Sweet..a couple of those you can take a belly split off, then split it in half again...there's more there than you think there is.
-
Looks like some really good staves right there. Good luck with them.
-

Looking good Charlie, should make a fine bow with that stave. :) Looks dry but if you don't get all the sap wood off at one setting it's not a bad idea to seal the back, they will check quickly if they are green or wet at all especially with sap wood left on. Looks old,did you say it has only been cut a year. :-\

Yeah Pappy we cut this last January or February...not sure which. And we do seal the back as we chase them down, even if it is just a short section. This wood feels wet, but it has been laying close to the ground all this time too. That is why we wanted to get on it and get it debarked, some sap wood off and sealed.
-
Nice looking osage, Charlie. Like Pappy said get the sapwood off be sure to seal the backs well.
-
Good looking staves Charlie. The rings are nice and even from one side to the other and look to be wide. You should end up with some great bows. Merry Christmas.
-
Got another 28 full length staves split out and 11 billtes today. The pile is getting smaller for sure.

Them are some good looking staves, Charlie! Good on ya!

Thanks every one. Looks like I will be loosing some of this wood. The worms (borers) have gotten into pretty bad. Not sure what it all will yield when we get done.
