I am just about done with this bow. It came from a nice yew stave that Dave Lawson of wilderness arrows gave me (snag). I am giving it to my buddy as a wedding present . It is the salmon backed bow on the bottom of the pics.
48# 28"
65" nntn.
Salmon backed yew

I've been wondering how salmon skins would work out. Those look great! Nice Job, and thanks for sharing.

I got my wife to take a couple full draw pics with her phone. This is a sweet shooter. I will get all the proper pics taken once I get the handle on there.

Looks great, buddy. can't wait to see it in person.
-
Looks good bud.

Here are some better pics. You can see it took a little set, the bottom limb more so. The stave was nearly perfectly straight, thanks Snag! The abalone inlay strike plate was my first attempt, and I think I can do a cleaner job on the next one, but I like the way it turned out.

Great tiller and excellent finish work.
-
OH MY!!! That thing is gorgeous! VERY nicely done sir!
-
Looks really nice! The tiller is good and the hand wrap turned out well. I really like the salmon skins on the yew. It makes a great color combo.
-
Thanks guys. Oh and Del, those nocks on the osage bow in the first pic are bighorn sheep horn, from a small ewe.
-
Wow you guys are awesome
really amazing work there
-
That turned out real nice Carson, beautifully done all around. Hows she shoot?
Have to get me some yew to try one of these days.
Greg
-
I one day dream of making something so beautiful. And that day is far considering i'm just close to completing my first bow.
-
Oughta be a a forgiving accurate shooter...nicely done
-
Beeeeeeeautiful! ;D ;D
Gabe
-
Gorgeous. I've been contemplating what kind of overlay's to use on my next yew bow and I think you confirmed that the white is a good look. Thanks for sharing!
-
That came out great Carson. Love the skins!
-
Thanks everybody. Greg, I have only shot it enough to know that I really love the way it shoots, and that it is going to be hard to give away. 48# is a little lighter than I am used to, so I wasn't expecting it to shoot such a quick arrow.

Thanks Blackhawk, that is what I was going for. I am giving it to a longtime friend who rifle hunts but has shown interest in bowhunting. It is a late wedding present. His wife is actually excited about archery too. Anyway, that is why it is a bit overbuilt and a little light on the draw.
Thanks Cedrik. I really enjoyed your spindle fire starting videos on youtube.
Thanks Ryan, I definitely like how the white on white overlays came out. I think I will do that again, good luck with yours.
Matt, I am sure you could. Keep after it and get that first bow of yours flinging some arrows!
Thanks Gabe. Mine is definitely lacking some curves compared to your little yew hottie. ;)
Thanks Keenan, means a lot coming from a guy who really knows fish skins.
-
Wow, Carson, it doesn't get much better than that. Total pro job....
-
That one might make a decent shooter out of even me :0
That is beautiful!!!
I bet it feels very nice on the draw and shoots, well done!!!
-
Thanks Steve and Coaster. I just put a few more arrows through it. It likes these 28" 50-55# with 145 gr points. It is sweet to shoot. I wanted to sink the archery hook in my buddies lip, and I think this will do the trick.
-
I added a fish vertebrate bead and finally wrote on the bow. You can see the hesitation to write on the beautiful yew belly wood in my cursive writing. :o Starting things off with a cursive capitol Z didn't help. ::) Does anybody know how to write those?

Great looking bow,love the skins.Sweet. :)
Pappy
-
excellent bow the skins are great on it.
-
That's a beauty! Jawge
-
If that shoots as sweet as it looks your buddy will be hooked for sure.
-
Wow. I like the finishing touches. The fish skin is so nicely done and I'm embarrased to say I wish I could lace up a handle like that.
-
Thanks everybody. I think he will like it.
-
I knew I gave that stave to the right guy! ;) Got to hold this bow and some of the others that Carson built at the Traditional Archers of Oregon annual banquet last Saturday....it was hard to let it go! haha Absolutely love the design on that yew bow! You do beautiful work Carson.
-
Great finishing touches Carson. I feel the same way about writing on bows. I know the importance but my penmanship is lacking and getting nervous never helps. ::)
-
Thanks Snag and Keenan. I had to borrow the bow back for display at the TAO banquet. It was hard to drop it back off at the new owners at the end of the night. :'( I will have to make you a bow with the next perfect yew stave you give to me Snag! ;)
-
Watch out Carson...might have to take you up on this!!! ;)
-
Consider it a standing offer Dave, so long as it is another one of those yew staves where the bow just falls out ready to shoot. ;D
-
I'm heading out to split some wood right now! ;D
-
carson, that is some mighty fine work..every thing you did was meant for that bow..i am really blown away about the skin..i have all ways thought that fish skin would lose a lot of the color..but that has a very nice appeal to me...thanks for sharing..john
-
Thanks John, that is very nice of you to say.
Alright Dave you better not be putting me on cause I am already dreaming about yew staves and what a bow for snag will look like. ;D
-
That is some beautiful wood, Way to make the most of it... how do you like that cork and how durable is it?
-
Soy, I love the cork. It is surprisingly durable. I used it to build up the arrow rest on this one, and on another recent bow used cork for the entire handle wrap (http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php?topic=36803.new;topicseen#new). After the cork is glued to the bow, I rough shape it with a sharp knife, then apply thin wood glue to it. Let it dry thoroughly, finish shaping with 80 grit sandpaper, then another coat of thin wood glue and let dry, sand with 150, and another coat of wood glue, this time not thinned. then whatever finish goes over the bow goes over the handle. I like how shellac adds a nice finish to the cork with steel wool used between coats. Sounds like more work than it is. I like the cork. For the full handle wrap, I cut the cork sheet to size, lapped the edges, and soaked in super thin hide glue for about 30 min before wrapping it around the bow, and wrapping an ace bandage around that.
-
Beautiful work Carson!!!
-
Beautiful work. That looks great.
-
Awesome finish work. I love everything about it. Looks like a sweet shooter to me.
-
Thanks Coaster, dvshunter, and hrhodes. It was hard to let go. Its sweet shooting is just a memory now :'(
-
Beautiful finishes. i can just dream about it.......
