Title: shield making

many years ago i used to make shields for individuals
these were made directly to an individuals life path

havent made any in some yrs
decided to begin making shields again
this is one i made for an recent art show that actually sold
the other i posted  on another page as it will be my giveaway for the holiday exchange

lightening shield
red and white dots represent hail. the yellow
streak down the middle represents lightening. made with deer rawhide, earth pigments, wool trade cloth, turkey feathers, and tin cones.

That's pretty cool Sadie!! I like the colors and what they represent.
Mine is of a different culture and time, but they share a purpose, probably in more than one way. This is wood and sheet metal.

great looking shield ... looks like a representation of the one everybody attributes to crazy horse

  the one shown is my personal shield
the war shield portion about 1/4 to 3/8 inches of rawhide with its personal decoration to give power & protection to to its owner
then the medicine shield covering made with deerskin and painted as yours is with earth pigments mixed with thinned
hide glue   the feathers are simulated eagle and hawk along with duck and turkey
the jingles are 45 calibre shells along with some brass and crow beads

nice shields everyone,

haven't yet tried mixing hide glue with powdered pigment... i'll have to try that.

Nice shields, very attractive and inspirational. That looks like something I'd like to make one day, I'll have to keep this in mind and gather up some of the materials along the way. Thanks for posting.

Shields are pretty cool. Here are a couple of mine. The back of the dragonfly shield shows the neck area of buffalo hide that I used. The brown color is from the epidermis.   Curtis

Whoa.. nice work you all.. stunning shields.. I have never made one of these! Needing a new lodge to put one in!!
