Title: Antler tips as a substitute for elb horn nocks?
Post by: toomanyknots on December 12, 2012, 12:29:18 am
Just wondering what anyone thinks about this. I could get some cheap antlers as pet toys at a pet store, like a couple bucks an antler tip, and I was wondering if I could work them into a basic elb horn nock shape, and if they would work on heavier weights. I have never worked antler. I would want to finish the antler down to a smooth finish, not keep the antler texture. Just basically use it as a horn substitute for elb horn nocks. Any thoughts? Any better than my spanish cedar bow idea?  ha...

I think antler is fine, just harder to work.
That one in the pic looks a nice shape, but looks like it should be on a bow twice as big... ok maybe I'm getting picky, but to me it is a bit fat.

I made moose antler traditional elb nocks not long ago...very hard to work, but they polish up fine. I believve I posted them here somewhere.
If I had my choice I'd stick with horn...

If you get antler tines there already In The pointed shape, just hollow out with a drill or dremel tool.

Cool! Lets us know how they do!  ;D

By the way, what tools are necessary for working antler, since it sounds like hard stuff to work? A dremel tool/rotary tool? Will rasps and files work, or is that just a bad idea?

You may consider not using antler for heavier bows. Its very porous compared to horn. When I use it for overlays I use just the outside 1/8" that's hard and solid. Maybe soak it with super glue to be sure it stays solid.

Moose antler seems to be more solid(non-porous) than deer.  I used files and rasp to do mine....don't have enough fine control with power toolsI find.

Those look good! Remember though... "back in the day" it was illegal to hunt the King's deer... If this is a reenactment piece, horn would be a better option, I think. But, if you're gonna shoot and hunt with it, go for the antler, it looks pretty neat!!

We intend on just using the tips, they are pretty solid and already got some shape to them.  :) Let you know how they turn out. :)
