Here's a new one. For now its my new favorite, that'll probably change in a few weeks tho ;D This was a breeze to make. I feel kinda stupid though, a week ago (when i started it) i was on a backset-handle whim and looked at this piece and thought i saw more of a gullwing in it than there was. Pretty much, i used the deflexed side to start the bow. (it started with 1" deflex.) I tried to take the set out by heat treating and it worked somewhat but it still has about two inches of set. Oh well. It shoots real smooth. It's also one of my longest bows ::)
Serviceberry
60" TtT
75# @ 27"
Since it's longer than my others i tried to get more draw out of it. Stained with some nice stuff i got at Ace.

Looks good. Are you going to break in that heavy bow with some hunting or what?
-
Thanks, i dunno yet. Maybe when i learn to hit something i'll try :-\ For now i'm thinking about practicing on Quail though, i heard they taste ok. I think it would really suck to hit a deer and not make a kill shot :-[

Awesome job!

Nice one, obviously one of yours, you really got your own distinctive style. And I like it, too :-*
Great work. With that hard a bend, I guess 2 inches of set is real good.
-
you did that bow right! and perfect tiller!
-
Nice bow Zion. Looks like you got the most out of that piece of wood. I can see the set back in the handle on the full draw pic.
You have those limbs bending real well and that set is nothing to be concerned about if it shoots nice. Keep posting them, I like
seeing your bows.

I agree. Very well done!
-
Thanks guys. I'm sure all you guys know what i'm saying when a bow kinda tillers itself out. Makes it a blast to make!
-
Very nice bow Zion, Great looking tiller. Love when they are a snap like that! Well done
-
wow, that's a nice bow! man! you've got snow already??? lame, were supposed to get it by about Thursday.... And it looks like you have rabbit tracks!(maybe im wrong, not much of a tracker..."ohhhh see this track its a panda...(later finds out its a squirrel.))
-
Good job on that one too! You build a great all purpose hunting weapon! I like your style! When I see that blue winter sky it makes me long for those blue Montana skies. Your weather in Eastern Washington is very similar to Montana. Over here on the west side of the mountains you don't see much blue sky in the winter. I digress, Anyway Zion, Another job well done! Heat treating wont help if the bow is over stressed thus why you still got a lot of set. Great tiller on this one though. How high is the brace height?
-
Don't sweat on the set, that's a good draw and decent poundage from a 60" TtT. Especially as the grip section is reasonably long.
I'd rather have a sweet shooter with some set than a smashed bow that had bags of reflex.
Nice tiller and I like the clean simple lines.

Thanks for the comments!
Muffin, we sure do get alot of pandas this time of year! Always eating my trees! (not much bamboo around here) ::) ;D
Ryan, the brace height is about an inch over my thumb and fist. I might shorten it tho, seems just a little high.
Another reason why i think i got some set is because it started out with like an inch already + It seasoned for like 2 weeks only. I still have a fair bit to learn about heat treating. it seemed to work really well on my hawthorn bow. Took less than an inch of set and has a similar design. Maybe serviceberry doesn't take heat quite as well as hawthorn?
-
Ah. So really it's just an inch of set with the included 1" of initial deflex? The deflex would actually help with such a short bow. Could be that it wasn't dry enough but 75# out of a bow that short is asking a lot so set should be expected.
-
Exactly. I was actually trying to make this bow a bit heavier, and when i initially tried bracing it the deflex was really handy. (didnt try to flip outa my hands.) I think the universal decision is to either have a lighter reflexed bow, or a heavier bow with set, at least during the early stages.
-
Zion, the same thought comes to mind every time I see a photo of you drawing one of those heavy bows: "How on earth does he do it!" You don't look like you weigh much more than the draw weight of that bow. There are some guys on other forums who like to brag about shooting 70# and 80# bows. If they pulled as much compared to their weight as you do, they'd be pulling 180-200#! I think they are wimps compared to you.
Me? I can comfortably shoot a 50# bow, might pull a 60#, but that's it. I weigh about 165.
Great work on the bow. I only made one serviceberry bow. It was made from about a 2" sapling andi pulled 40#.
Do you have nice straight serviceberry in your neck of the prairie?

Thanks Jim! I'm 120 lbs. Since i'm a wrestler i try not to eat much, but i still work out ALOT. The result is that i don't gain much muscle weight but instead strengthen the muscles i already have. Instead of bulking up and having less defined muscles your body just gets lean and cut, so you weigh less, but have the same muscle capacity.( A really good strategy for non-linemen ;D)
The serviceberry ranges from twisted to straight. For one, the pieces i harvest usually aren't big enough to split so that's an advantage. It grows EVERYWHERE though!!
-
Really nice bow! Like others have said, I really like seeing your bows as well. Keep posting!
-
Very nicely done!!
-
Nice looking bow! 75#....sheesh! :o ;)
-
You did a great job on it.

Thanks Arrowind, Coaster, Misslemaster, Rob! Missle, the draw is actually really smooth mostly because of the set it has, So it doesn't wear down on your shoulder and seems pretty light. Either that or my scale's wrong ::)
