Title: Mystery stone.. ID please?

Here is some stone I picked up and spalled out. I got it in NW Alabama, but it was not in a natural location. It was obviously quarried and brought in. they used to to make a foundation for a railroad bridge. Most was Fractured up really bad, but I salvaged a few nodules and spalled them out.  So I am not saying it is "from" Alabama, b\c I am quite sure it isnt.   I have an "idea" as to what it is but dont want to sway your decision. without looking at anyone elses answers first. What do YOU think it is?  see if you agree with me, cuz otherwise it is a mystery.

I am not much of a rock hound but that looks a lot like some High Silica, Dolimite Limestone that comes out of Jackson County AL.

By the way, I am feeling much better...  Will be off work for several more weeks.
Lets talk trade some more. ;D

Looks like pockets of chert in limestone that I find in the Bloomington area of IN. Most of it is usually too fractured or small after removing the limestone.

I heat treated 2 pieces last night to experiment with..  no one mentioned what I thought it was, But I have never seen it in raw form so i suppose I am likely wrong.  But I will let you know how it turns out when cool

Have you tried making points from it yet? I see that you spalled some out, I was just wondering how it flakes and if there is anything that you could compare its workability?

I treated 2 small clunky pieces yesterday for an experiment and they flake so nice and smooth. It acts like really nice flint ridge by the way it flakes. extremely sharp too.   I am now excited to heat the rest of the spalls and get to making some points

Well I was thinking it might have been Novaculite since i have not seen nov. in raw form.... but after cooking it I see it is not novaculite after all... but it is a really good chert though and I am happy to have it.  Next time I go to bama I will so my best to procure some more.

I'll bet the dark stuff smells like crude oil when you break it.
