Title: Big Mule Deer
Post by: adb on November 10, 2012, 05:57:40 pm
Quick snap of a nice mule deer a buddy of mine shot a week ago. We were hunting in the shotgun/muzzleloader only zone. Spot and stock... shot him at 110 yds with a slug gun while he was still bedded. Check out the drop tine on the right side. That's me holding him, while my buddy snapped a quick pic. We just about died draggin' him outta the valley behind us!!

Looks like the country where I grew up in back in North Dakota.  Stalking within 110 yds in ground like that and few hidden approaches is really a testament to your friend's patience and perserverence.

Wow, beautiful buck.  Just beautiful.

Funny... this valley runs SE down into the USA! There's actually more cover than appears. We just couldn't get closer, because he was bedded on the edge of a bluff, not in it. We think he was watching some does down in the valley bottom, cuz he never looked behind him, or saw us.

Blah, blah, blah!! 50 ain't great, but it's not all bad!

I just heard that this deer weighted 150# hanging on the hook at the butcher shop, ready to cut & wrap! So, you can usually double that for live weight. Draggin' a 300# deer isn't easy on the flat, never mind up a 30 degree slope!

Souris River Valley?

I know just how you got him.  I'm the same way when I see some does...I tend to "fix focus", too!   ;D

No... it's the Qu'appelle Valley. The Souris is farther to the SE.

I hear yah on the does. We get in a heap of trouble and seem to lose our minds when it comes to the fairer sex. The undoing of many a good buck/man!

I've been thru the area, adb.  Seems to me there is an interesting fur trade area museum in that area.

I thought I saw some Red River Cart tracks in that photo!

That's a fine animal, Adam. Congrats to your friend. Thank goodness you were along to help him get it out! You look kinda tuckered out in the pick, though. ;)
