My dad brought me a whole bucket of these persimmons just the other day to feed to the deer. Persimmon trees are very common around here but I have never seen anything like these, they are about the size of a medium size tomato. He said that he got these out of someones yard and they told him the tree was a persimmon hybrid of some type. Anyways just thought they were kinda cool and someone else might enjoy seeing them too. Has anyone else seen a persimmon hybrid before?

About 20 years back a coworker of mine was telling me about some huge persimmons that were growing on tree in his Granddads yard.
I told him that I did not think they could be persimmons. Never heard of any that large.
He brought two of them to work.. They were persimmons.. They were the size of Baseballs!!!
He went back and talked to his Granddad about the tree. His Granddad told him that it was some sort of Hybrid.

Japanese persimmons most likely............unlike our persimmons they can be eaten anytime and are not astringent like our native persimmons. My uncle has a few of them planted. They say when they are mature they can produce around 500+ pounds of fruit a year. Fuyu and Jiro are good variety's.

Look like the ones you can buy at the grocery, freakishly huge compared to the native ones I have in the woods.

I wouldnt feed any thing that tasty to no dang ol deers. Let em fend for themselves. ;D
-
Yep- those are Japanese Persimmons. They have quite a few of them in South Alabama.

The Japanese love their seasonal foods!
Living here in Japan, I look forward to
autumn so I can eat lots of persimmons.
The astringent ones are peeled and dried
outdoors on strings, which makes them
sweet and delicious. My father-in-law
cans them in brandy...it's a great topping
for ice cream!

I have relatives who have one in their backyard. I love em! Not like our wild persimmons at all - sort of like a cross between a plum and a peach.
-
Well it looks like I may have to go pick some more and give them a try. I never have much cared for native persimmons but if these japanese persimmons are as good as you guys say they are I wont be feeding them to the deer anymore. :)
-
do the deer like them as much as our wild ones? Might be worth planting a couple to see if they will germinate the seeds. :)
-
I'm gonna have to look that up, I love our native persimmons!
....you know.... when they're ripe.
-
I don't think they taste anything like our native persimmons.... They look like an overgrown version, but the taste is lots different/better.

Yummy! Looks like Fuyu. Chris Cade has been planting them all over his farm for the deer.
